Madison and the establishment of the judicial review OBJECTIVES: Students will read, examine, analyze, and define the following: Judicial Review Circumstances surrounding Marbury v Madison The Supreme Court’s ruling in Marbury v. Madison Chief Justice John Marshall’s written opinion from the Court MATERIALS: Student text How Does the Supreme Court use the Power of Judicial Review? Notebook Paper Pen/Pencil ACTIVITY: Distribute the student text How Does the Supreme Court use the Power of Judicial Review? Directions: o Students have 5 minutes to write 3 questions in the first section of the text o Once the 5 minutes has expired, students have 2 minutes to ask as many questions as possible to the teacher. Questions have to be based on the reading and visible in the text in they have read No vague or broad answers o If the student stumps the teacher, the students receive a point o After the 2 minutes of questioning, the students have 7 minutes to read over the next section of text o Once the 7 minutes is up, have students flip the text over and then the teacher has 2 minutes to ask as many questions as possible. o For every student the teacher stumps, the teacher receives a point. o Repeat until the end of the text ASSESSMENT: Lesson Three 2 Judicial Review/Marbury v. Madison Students will be informally assessed on the comprehension of the material covered through oral responses.
