TAVARES HIGH SCHOOL DAILY BULLETIN Welcome students and staff. Today is Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Please stand for the pledge to the flag. I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Please remain standing for a moment of silence. Thank you, please be seated. Anyone leaving campus during school hours must leave through the attendance office. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a referral and consequences. Lockers will be sold Wednesday through Friday in the cafeteria during both lunches. Lockers are $5. (Encourage them to bring correct change.) There will be three tables, one for each of the locker kiosks. They should get in line for the kiosk that best fits their needs, but certain areas do tend to sell more quickly than others….first come, first served. GUIDANCE Students who want to have a schedule change may pick up a blue schedule change form in the cafeteria. Complete it and return it to the box in the cafeteria. If counselors are able to grant your request, you will be called to their office. This will take several days, so be patient. Do not go to the guidance office to see the counselor for a change until you are called. Schedule change requests are due by August 31. SENIORS Seniors who are missing a class any period are to report to Mrs. Croker in Guidance. Students needing to be assigned as TA’s are to report to Mrs. Croker in Guidance. Seniors who have turned in a request for a schedule change will be called to guidance with a pass. Senior dues this year are $15. The first 180 seniors who pay dues will also receive a “senior” sportpack. You may pay either Mrs. Glass or Ms. Drees. Be sure you have signed the signature sheet in your homebase so that your name will be on the senior t shirt. Any senior interested in submitting a design for the senior t-shirt needs to turn your drawing in by Wednesday, September 5th. Turn them in to either a class officer or a senior sponsor. If your drawing is accepted, you will receive a free t-shirt. Seniors sign up to participate as a member of the Senior Council in your home base. The first meeting will be Monday, August 27, after school in Mrs.Glass’ room. JUNIORS There will be a meeting for Junior Class officers after school Tuesday in Mr. Glass’s room, 6212. CLUBS ATHLETICS Swimmers: Practice starts today at 2 p.m. There is a parent meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in Coach Balkaran’s room, Building 2, Room 218. If you volunteered for the Special Olympics last March for track and field, please stop by Ms. Vineyard’s room, 5-101, as she has a certificate and sticker to give you for all your help. There will be a meeting for any girls interested in playing golf this year at 1:30 p.m. today with Coach Sauerbrey in Building 5, Room 101. There will be a meeting for all girls interested in playing basketball at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Mrs. Solomon’s room, Building 6, Room 220. Please see Mrs. Solomon if you are not able to attend the meeting. There will be a meeting for any boy interested in playing basketball after school Thursday in Coach Glass’s room, Building 6, Room 212. It will not last long. There will be a short boys’ golf meeting right after school today in Mr. Jackson’s room, Building 6, Room 211. There will be a brief meeting immediately after school on Thursday for any boys or girls interested in bowling. The meeting will be held in Mrs. Madle’s room, building 6 room 122. Any girl interested in playing soccer and participating in pre season conditioning, there will be a meeting in Mrs. Hettmann’s room Bldg 2-211D, Thursday at 2:30. There will be a swimmers parent meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Coach Balkaran’s room, Bldg 2-218. Word of the Day moonlight It Must Have Been Moonglow Word of the Day: Today is the 150th anniversary of the birth of French composer Claude Debussy. His best-known work, a piano solo called Clair de Lune, is the third movement from his four-part Suite bergamasque. Clair de lune is the French term for moonlight, a noun that turned up in English in the 14th century. The figurative verb moonlight is a mid-20th century development. On This Day in History 1485 - The War of the Roses ended with the death of England's King Richard III. He was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field. His successor was Henry V II. 1567 - The "Council of Blood" was established by the Duke of Alba. This was the beginning of his reign of terror in the Netherlands. 1642 - The English Civil War began when Charles I called Parliament and its soldiers traitors. 1762 - Ann Franklin became the editor of the Mercury of Newport in Rhode Island. Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year. 1984 - The last Volkswagen Rabbit rolled off the assembly line in New Stanton, PA. 1986 - Kerr-McGee Corp. agreed to pay the estate of the late Karen Silkwood $1.38 million to settle a 10-yearold nuclear contamination lawsuit. 1989 - Nolan Ryan became the first major league pitcher to strike out 5000 batters. (MLB) 1990 - U.S. President George H.W. Bush signed an order for calling reservists to aid in the build up of troops in the Persian Gulf. 1990 - The U.S. State Department announced that the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait would not be closed under President Saddam Hussein's demand. 1990 - Angry smokers blocked a street in Moscow to protest the summer-long cigarette shortage. 1991 - It was announced by Yugoslavia that a truce ordered on August 7th with Croatia had collapsed. 1991 - Mikhail S. Gorbachev returned to Moscow after the collapse of the hard-liners' coup. On the same day he purged the men that had tried to oust him. 1992 - In Rostock, Germany, neo-Nazi violence broke out against foreigners. 1996 - U.S. President Clinton signed legislation that ended guaranteed cash payments to the poor and demanded work from recipients. 1998 - "The Howard Stern Radio Show" premiered on CBS to about 70% of the U.S. 2004 - In Oslo, Norway, a version of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" and his work "Madonna" were stolen from the Munch Museum. This version of "The Scream," one of four different versions, was a tempera painting on board.
