Violating Social Norms
Name_________________
In this experiment, you will: (Total Points: 50)

Choose at least one social norm to “violate”
o They can be from the list or something you choose yourself (approved by me!)

Document all of the following for each: (5 points each)
o Where were you? (be specific)
o What time of day was it?
o Who were you with?
o What norm were you violating?
o How did people react? (Bystanders, workers, etc)

Write a conclusion detailing: (5 points each)
o How you felt while violating the social norm?
o Was it hard for you to break the norm?
o Did you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable?
o Did people react they way you thought they would?
o What were your overall thoughts/feelings
**Please record your experiments and share them with the class.**
You may violate any norm you choose, as long as you don't risk harming yourself or others, and as
long as your behavior doesn't reflect badly on Muncie Central. You should not do anything that
breaks a law, disrupts a class or public event, hurts or threatens others, or includes taking or
damaging other people's property -- such norm violations will result in a
score of zero.
