After twenty months of negotiation, most were released in exchange for $53 million in food and medicine. Cuban Missile Crisis • Nikita Khrushchev, leader of USSR, builds 42 missile sites in Cuba • US spy planes find them – What does US do? • JFK says: – USSR must remove missiles – US will blockade Cuba to prevent any more from entering – US is prepared to invade Cuba *Remember, both countries have nuclear weapons (A & H bombs)…. What happens if the USSR continues to build missiles?
