Student Progress Chart
This is your student progress chart. Do each activity in the order that it is presented to
you. Your goal is to MASTER the standard for the unit.
Timeframe goal = 10 days (7 Journal Entries)
Unit 1 – European Settlement – Pre Revolutionary War
SSUSH1 The student will describe European settlement in North America during the 17 th century.
a. Explain Virginia’s development; include the Virginia Company, tobacco cultivation,
relationships with Native Americans such as Powhatan, development of the House of
Burgesses, Bacon’s Rebellion, and the development of slavery.
b. Describe the settlement of New England; include religious reasons, relations with Native
Americans (e.g., King Phillip’s War), the establishment of town meetings and
development of a legislature, religious tensions that led to the founding of Rhode Island,
the half-way covenant, Salem Witch Trials, and the loss of the Massachusetts charter and
the transition to a royal colony.
c. Explain the development of the mid-Atlantic colonies; include the Dutch settlement of
New Amsterdam and subsequent English takeover, and the settlement of Pennsylvania.
d. Explain the reasons for French settlement of Quebec.
e. Analyze the impact of location and place on colonial settlement, transportation, and
economic development; include the southern middle, and New England colonies.
SSUSH2 The student will trace the ways that the economy and society of British North America
developed.
a. Explain the development of mercantilism and the trans-Atlantic trade.
b. Describe the Middle Passage, growth of the African population, and African-American
culture.
c. Identify Benjamin Franklin as a symbol of social mobility and individualism.
d. Explain he significance of the Great Awakening.
SSUSH3 The student will explain the primary causes of the American Revolution.
a. Explain how the end of Anglo-French imperial competition as seen in the French and Indian
War and the 1763 Treaty of Paris laid the groundwork for the American Revolution.
b. Explain colonial response to such British actions as the Proclamation of 1763, the Stamp Act,
and the Intolerable Acts as seen in Sons and Daughters of Liberty and Committees of
Correspondence.
c. Explain the importance of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense to the movement for
independence.
SSUSH4 The student will identify the ideological, military, and diplomatic aspects of the
American Revolution.
a. Explain the language, organization, and intellectual sources of the Declaration of
Independence; include the writing of John Locke and the role of Thomas
Jefferson.
b. Explain the reason for and significance of the French alliance and foreign
assistance and the roles of Benjamin Franklin and the Marquis de Lafayette.
c. Analyze George Washington as a military leader; include the creation of a
professional military and the life of a common soldier, and describe the
significance of the crossing of the Delaware River and Valley Forge.
Journal Entry 1
Essential Question -- Why was Virginia founded and how did it thrive?
Journal Entry will be labeled “Critical Questions Chapter 2 Sec.2 (Virginia)”
Completely answer each of the following questions from chapter 2 section 2 (pages 4248) and before you ask the questions are all in that section but are in random order.
Journal Entry 2
Essential Question-- How did the founding of the Mid-Atlantic Colonies differ from New
England and the Southern Colonies?
Journal Entry will be titled, “Writing Prompt – Middle Colonies and Quebec”
In your journal, you will write a page answering the 5 questions covering the
Mid-Atlantic colony of Pennsylvania. You will also need to write several sentences
explaining why the French settlement of Quebec was founded.
Essential Question -- Why did early colonial Americans settle where they did and how
did that influence their development?
Journal Entry will be titled, “Graphic Organizer covering the North, Middle, and
Southern colonies”
Read page 67 and use the graphic organizer to correctly identify the northern,
middle, and southern colonies and describe the major cash crops, raw materials, and
goods produced in each colony.
Journal Entry 3
Essential Question -- – What was the impact of Mercantilism and Trans-Atlantic trade
on the Colonies?
Journal Entry titled, “Writing Prompt – The Middle Passage”
In your journal, you will need to write at least half a page answering the 8
questions listed on the writing prompt using the article titled “Trans Atlantic Slave Trade
and The Middle Passage” and use pages 75-77 in your textbook to answer the questions.
Journal Entry “Trans-Atlantic Trade/ Triangle Trade Map”
Complete the Trans-Atlantic Trade/ Triangle Trade Map in your journal by
correctly identifying the trade routes and what was traded; label the colonies, Europe,
Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean. Information is located on pages 76-77 and pages A4 –A5
in the back of your textbook. If you need a laptop to finish the map activity and one is
available, then you may use it.
Journal Entry 4
Essential Question -- Who was Benjamin Franklin and how did his life represent social
mobility and individualism?
Journal Entry titled, “Benjamin Franklin Graphic Organizer”
Read and completely answer the questions on the graphic organizer about
Benjamin Franklin using the information found on pages 82-84.
Journal Entry 5
Essential Question -- How did American Colonials respond to changes in British tax
policies after the French and Indian War?
Journal Entry titled, “ The Stirrings of Rebellion” (Handout)
Read chapter 4 section 1 of your textbook and then complete each phrase to trace
the sequence of events leading to the colonists’ rebellion.
Journal Entry 6
Essential Question -- What was the importance of Common Sense in the move toward
Revolution?
Journal Entry titled, “ Ideas Help Start a Revolution” (Handout)
Read chapter 4 section 2 and correctly answer the questions on the timeline of
events that helped to start the American Revolution.
Essential Question -- What was the purpose of the Declaration of Independence?
Journal Entry titled, “Interpreting the Declaration of Independence” (Handout)
Using a dictionary and a copy of The Declaration of Independence, rephrase each excerpt
then draw a simple sketch about the subject of the excerpt.
Journal Entry 7
Essential Question – – What was the significance of Washington’s military leadership in
the crossing of the Delaware and Valley Forge?
Journal Entry titled, “Struggling Towards Saratoga” (Graphic Organizer) Read
chapter 4 section 3 and write answers to the questions about each of the Revolutionary
War battles listed on the graphic organizer. Complete parts B and C by correctly
summarizing the difficulties faced by each group of patriots and by defining the terms at
the bottom on the page.
Journal Entry titled, “ The Siege of Yorktown” (Text & Map) Read the paragraphs
about The Battle of Yorktown and study the map then answer the questions about it.
