Topic—A few more key developments in the West during Period 4
Reading—From Ch. 23 in the text--review the reading assigned for Thursday before the break and then complete the
new reading assignment below:
 Read Ch. 23 p.513-529 (skip the intro story p. 512, the caption under the picture on p. 513 AND the
section entitled “Political Trends and the Rise of New Nations on p. 522-524 but DO start reading again
about “Social Question…” on p. 524 and stop at “Western Settler Societies”) in Stearns. I know it’s
choppy but I’m trying to find a way to use this reading to our advantage!
 Much will be review (which SHOULD make sense now that you have read and learned about the
French Rev (1789-1815) and the Industrial Revolution. You don’t need new notes about these, but
DO examine the cartoon on p. 517. Political cartoons were becoming much more popular by this
time. You should be able to analyze these as a PRIMARY SOURCE so see if you can understand this
one (reading what Stearns has in the green box will help).
 HOWEVER, there IS new material in the chapter. Here are the topics/pages where you SHOULD
take complete notes:
o About the Congress of Vienna and political ideologies & changes in 19 th century Europe on
p. 518-9—“ A Conservative Settlement and the Revolutionary Legacy”
 What was the Congress of Vienna and what was its purpose? What were some of
the key decision made there? Was it successful?
 Explain the 19th European concept of: conservative, liberal, and radical
 Discuss the Greek Revolution.
 What key political changes occurred in the US, Britain, and elsewhere?
o “Industrialization and the Revolutions” on p. 519-21
 What was the Chartist movement?
 Discuss the revolutions of 1848. Where? Goals? Outcomes?
o “Cultural Transformations,” p. 527-529
Discuss the following themes THOROUGHLY:
 Science and technology
 Belief systems, ideologies, philosophies & art and arch….ROMANTICISM
 THEN read about the impact of nationalism in Europe, new migrations, and late 19 th century
developments in the West
 READ ABOUT THE UNIFICATION OF ITALY AND GERMANY, p. 522-524 under the heading
“Political Trends and the Rise of New Nations”
o WHAT AP THEME IS AT WORK HERE???
 Read “Western Settler Societies,” p. 529-534 THEN read the intro story on p. 512 AND the caption
under the picture on p. 513.
o Discuss developments regarding the US
o Discuss developments in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
o Discuss the theme of migration and related issues (see intro story and p. 513)
Tuesday 2/23:
 Topic for Discussion—Russia c. 1750-1900 (actually to about 1914)
 Reading—Stearns Ch. 27, p. 616-625 (stop at ”Japan: Transformation Without Revolution”) AND notes (print the file
from the blog)
 Read the notes first THEN read Stearns—you will need to read the text…the notes are NOT enough!
Between the two you should have a pretty good idea of the situation in Russia during this period.
BRING YOUR QUESTIONS!!! We will discuss what you feel we need to discuss!
 You should find plenty of information about the following in the reading—take thorough notes! The
bold ones are the ones directly related to the Industrial Revolution, but there is much more than that in
this chapter!
o
o
o
o
Labor Systems—BIG change! Discuss it—why reform? Result?
Industrialization
 to what extent did Russia industrialize during this period?
 This was a state-sponsored program—what does that mean and why was it that
type of program?
 Discuss Sergei Witte’s programs for modernization and industrialization. The
text says the results were ambiguous…in what way?
Technology
Political themes:
 Political structures and forms of governance:
What political philosophy prevailed within the Russian government? Discuss!
Were there any attempts at reform? Discuss
 Empire:
Where were Russia’s interests? How did they contribute to wars? How’d that go for
them?

Revolts/Revolutions?
Wednesday 2/24:


Topic—Japan c. 1750-1914 (clearly Steans uses a different periodization!!)
I’ve attached the notes that I gave you last time you were reading about Japan with some added info. A quick review can
help!
Reading—Stearns Ch. 27, read the intro story on p. 614 and read p. 625-633 (starting at “Japan…”) to the end of the chapter
 Themes of note:
Your notes should address each theme thoroughly and thoughtfully
 Science & Technology
 Industrialization—also a state-sponsored program. Read carefully and be thorough in your notes here.
 Empire
 Philosophical/Belief Systems
 Gender Roles
 Other questions to consider:
 How did the Japanese government change during this period? Make SURE you understand this!!
 Compare and contrast the Japanese and Chinese responses to increasing western influence during this
period. (read the “In Depth” On p. 627 for this. You may have some gaps because we have skipped
Ch. 26, which includes China 1750-1900, for now, but do the best you can!)
 Why do you think Stearns put Russia and Japan together in this chapter?

Topic—Latin America AFTER Independence: What Impact from the Industrial Revolution?
Reading—from file with the reading about Latin America. I reposted for this week. You’ll be reading from the end of the
file p. 853-859 about “The Industrial Revolution and Latin America in the 19 th Century” and DO take separate notes

America? Describe the social hierarchy that developed in this region.
 Discuss the export boom that developed in Latin America in the second half of the 19 th century. What
did Latin American import? Hmmm….sound familiar?
 Discuss capital investment in in Latin America…who invested and for what purposes? Who
benefitted? Who didn’t? (you have to keep reading past the info about migration to find this)
 Discuss migration to Latin America in the 19th century.
 Discuss the revolution that occurred in Mexico in the early 20 th century.
o Causes
o Goals of the revolutionaries
o Outcome
 What did NOT happen in Latin America as a result of the export boom of the later 19 th century? WHY
NOT?
 Instead, the economies of Latin American countries became dependent on whom? How did this lead
to political domination?
