Metaphor:
Metaphor – A metaphor is a direct comparison between two
seemingly unrelated things. A metaphor always says that one thing
IS another thing ( even though we know they are very different).
For example:
“Life is a process of becoming . . ." - Anaïs Nin
"No man is an island" —John Donne
Prince – Little Red
I guess I shoulda known
Corvette
By the way u parked your car sideways
That it wouldn’t last
See you’re the kinda person
That believes in makin’ out once
Love ‘em and leave ‘em fast
I guess I must be dumb
cuz u had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used
But it was Saturday night
I guess that makes it all right
And u say what have I got 2 lose?
And honey I say
Little red corvette
Baby you’re much 2 fast
Little red corvette
U need a love that’s gonna last
Simile:
A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared,
often in a phrase introduced by ‘like’ or ‘as’.
For example:
“Life is like a box of chocolates.
You never know what you’re gonna get"
– Forrest Gump
"My love is like a red, red rose."
— Robert Burns
“That hat looks, like . . . totally awesome on you!``
– Ben Medd
Head Like A Hole – Nine Inch Nails
God money i'll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don't want everything he wants it all.
no you can't take it
no you can't take it
no you can't take that away from me
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
i'd rather die than give you control.
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
i'd rather die than give you control.
bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.
bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.
God money's not looking for the cure.
God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure.
God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money's not one to choose.
you know who you are.
It’s Time to Play Single Out That Simile!
With your host, Mr. Meddaphore
(And remember, you can’t spell ‘simile’ without ‘smile’! )
Love is a Battlefield – Pat Benatar
We are young
heartache to heartache
we stand
No promises no demands
Love is a battlefield.
We are strong
no-one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield.
You're begging me to go
then making me stay Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
do I stand in your way
Or am I the best thing
you've had?
Believe me
believe me
I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love
and I'm chained to your side.
We are young
heartache to heartache
we stand
no promises, no demands
love is a battlefield
When I'm losing control
will you turn me away
or touch me deep inside'
And when all this gets old
will it still feel the same?
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer
I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders
you'll need me to hold.
We are young
heartache to heartache
we stand
Battlefield
Jordin Sparks (performer)
Don't try to explain your mind
I know what's happening here
One minute it's love
And suddenly it's like a battlefield
One word turns into a war
Why is it the smallest things
that tear us down?
My world's nothing when you don't
I'm not here without a shield
Can't go back now
Both hands, tied behind my back
with nothing
Oh no, these times when we
climb so fast to fall again
Why we gotta fall for it now
I never meant to start a war
You know I never wanna hurt you
Don't even know what we're fighting for
Why does love always feel like a battlefield
A battlefield, a battlefield?
Why does love always feel like a battlefield
A battlefield, a battlefield?
Why does love always feel like
Can't swallow our pride
Neither of us wanna raise that flag
If we can't surrender then we both gonna lose
What we had, oh no
Both hands tied behind my back with nothing
Oh no, these times when we climb so fast
to fall again. I don't wanna fall for it now
Chorus
We could pretend that we are friends tonight
(Oh, oh, oh)
And in the morning we'll wake up
and we'll be alright
'Cause baby, we don't have to fight
And I don't want this love to feel like
Chorus
Identify the following metaphors and similes:
“Love is a battlefield.” ~ Pat Benatar
“Our love is like water, pinned down and abused for being strange.” – Live
“The Way Kathie Lee needs Regis, that’s the way I need Jesus.” – Kanye West
"He was screaming like my wife." – Mike Tyson
"Fear is your best friend or your worst enemy. It's like fire. If you can control it, it can
cook for you; it can heat your house. If you can't control it, it will burn everything
around you and destroy you. If you can control your fear, it makes you more alert,
like a deer coming across the lawn.” – Mike Tyson
"To sit here at the same table with my hero, George W. Bush...I feel like I'm dreaming.
Somebody pinch me. You know what, I'm a pretty sound sleeper, that may not be
enough...Somebody shoot me in the face." – Stephen Colbert
“Open wide baby bird, 'cause momma's got a big fat night crawler of Truth. Here
comes The Colbert Report!” – Stephen Colbert
Your task for tonight
Step 1:
Find a song that has at least two
different similes. Identify each simile
and explain how each relates to the
overall meaning of the song.
Step 2:
Bring in a copy of the lyrics of your
song, and present your findings to the
class. You should either bring an mp3 of your
song for your presentation, or you should ask
Mr. Medd to find one for you.
Each presentation will be evaluated out of a possible
20 marks (10 marks per explanation of simile).
Presentations will take place tomorrow.
