Romeo and Juliet Diary Project Due Date: _________________________* Assignment: Create a diary for the character of Romeo (boys) or Juliet (girls) and decorate it as appropriate for that character. This is an individual project, and you may NOT work with any other students. Procedures: 1. Write a minimum of five entries (1 full, typed page each and on separate sheets of paper) that are from your character’s viewpoint. The entries should show change and growth based upon what each character knows at certain points in the play. The entries should expand the entire play from Act I to Act V. Some optional ideas: What did your character feel or think when they first fell in love? What is your character’s viewpoint about the feud between their families? What are your character’s thoughts about events in the play? (Juliet marrying Paris, Romeo killing Tybalt, Friar Lawrence’s plan) What does your character plan for the future? 2. You should include at least one direct quote from the text for each diary entry. This should be a jumping off point to explain something further in the play. Put the quote in quotation marks, underline or highlight the quote and cite it, for example: (I, ii, 7-10). Note: Boys will need to be creative in working in a quote for Act IV, as Romeo has been banished from Verona in Act IV, but is still in the play. Find a way to use a quote from another character. A quote is still required. 3. Decorate the cover of your diary appropriately for your character. Be creative and use any materials that you have on hand at home to create your diary. Some ideas include: cardboard, felt, fabric scraps, construction paper, foil, feathers, crayons, markers, sequins, glitter, stickers, paint, ribbon, string, magazine pictures, tissue paper, etc. Grading: 100 Point Major Grade 5 diary entries from the POV of either Romeo or Juliet One entry for Act IAct V 1 typed pg. each in length uses good grammar and structure neat and easy to understand 60 points (12 points each) 5 Quotes from the play: 1 quote in every entry for every act highlight or underline quote integrate quote into your entry correctly cite quotations 15 points (3 points each) Creativity of the diary cover diary cover is appropriate for character Neat and put together No note book paper 25 points *This project will also need to be submitted to turnitin.com by 11:59pm on the due date. *** GET STARTED EARLY…THIS IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN DO IN CLASS THE DAY IT IS DUE! *** 1 July 15, 1326 ACT ONE SAMPLE DIARY ENTRY Dear Diary, My heart has grown heavy, and my worry continues to grow. My family is beyond control, and I am at a loss as to what steps to take. Yesterday morning my servants were fighting with servants from the evil Montague family. My nephew, Tybalt, showed up, and things got worse (like they always do in his presence). My how he loves to fight! So, the Prince threatened that he would sentence us to death if our families were ever caught fighting again. I had to have a private meeting with him, as did Montague. I know that Tybalt cannot control himself, so I worry that the threat will become a reality. His sword seems to show itself whenever a Montague is anywhere in sight. I don’t really blame him though—I hate those Montagues—they have been our enemies for years. I just know that this is not the last scuffle we will engage in with them. On a happier note, Count Paris showed up at my door and asked for permission to marry my darling Juliet. I was a bit stunned at first, considering she is still a child; she is only thirteen! I told Paris, “My child is yet a stranger in the world, / She hath not seen the change of fourteen years; / Let two more summers wither in their pride / Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride” (I, ii, 8-11). But, he is a charming young man with a great family. He may be just what Juliet needs to realize how much she needs to grow up. I invited him to the ball we are having tonight, so maybe they will get a chance to meet. I cannot even believe I am thinking about marrying my daughter off; it seems like just yesterday that she was running around here in diapers. My how time flies! The party should be exciting; I sent a servant off this morning to invite everyone. There will be food and drinks and celebrations for everyone. If it is anything like my parties in the past, I know everyone will have a wonderful evening—I will not let anything mess this up. I love this time of year! I am off to dress for the ball. Yours, Lord Capulet 2 Romeo and Juliet Banner Extra Credit Opportunity: 4th nine Weeks This will be worth one quiz grade (200 points) Due date:__________________ 1. Choose the two consecutive lines from Romeo and Juliet that you think are the most important. 2. Create a banner (much like the ones found in many churches) out of fabric. There is no size requirement; however, it should be easily visible from across a room. If I were making one, I would estimate that it would be approximately three feet by three feet of fabric. The print on the fabric should be easily read and be pleasing to the eye. DO NOT SIMPLY GET A PIECE OF FABRIC AND WRITE YOUR QUOTE ON IT! Be creative! Your banner should include some way to hang it up—fabric ties, holes, strings, etc. 3. The front of your banner should include the quoted lines (with quotation marks), and the line numbers from our textbook cited appropriately, for example: (III, ii, 1415). 4. Your name and class period should be on the BACK. 5. Write a one-page explanation of why you chose the two lines as the most important in the play. Include the two lines quoted at the top of the page. ** No extra credit projects will be taken after the due date for any reason (including absences), so plan ahead. ** 3
