SOPHOMORE ENGLISH (I) Wheaton North High School Mr. Anderson peter.anderson@cusd200.org COURSE DESCRIPTION / UNITS OF STUDY Unit 7 = “The World and Me: Cultural Identity” - How do one’s cultural experiences contribute to their understanding of self? - How does the examination of other cultures widen our global understanding? - Primary text: The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky - Supplementary texts will include informational texts, op-eds, and some poetry - Unit will end with a multimedia presentation to the class Unit 8 = “Breaking the Cycle” - What does it mean to break a cycle and why would a person choose to do so? - In what situations do individuals question authority? - Primary Texts: Fahrenheit 451 and Anthem Fahrenheit 451 is a student-purchased book for the semester. If you would like to have the school purchase it for you, please turn in the $___ by August 30. ISBN #: 978-1-4516-7331-9 - Supplementary texts will include informational texts, speeches, and some poetry. - Students will also be assigned into a literature circle for independent reading that will be due in December - Unit will culminate in a compare/contrast essay Unit 9 = “Growing up in a Digital Age”” - How does growing up in the digital age influence how we think and act? - Texts will be mostly informational this unit in the form of essays and articles - Students will be expected to have finished their independent reading / literature circle reading during this unit SUPPLIES You will need (and bring every day to class): A THREE-RING binder with FIVE tabbed dividers Your reading material(s) at ALL times If you do not already own a flash drive, look into getting one (does not have to be “English class only”) CLASS EXPECTATIONS Daily attendance & make-up work turned in within 2 days if excused absent Maintenance of your three-ring binder, including these sections (in this order): section 1 = Notes (keep all your loose leaf paper here) section 2 = Vocabulary & Grammar section 3 = Texts section 4 = Writing section 5 = Miscellaneous Reading & analysis of all homework, with notes prepared for class discussion GRADING SCALE Here is the breakdown of how your semester grade will be weighted: Formal Culminating Unit Assessments = 25% Discussion = 15% Homework / Class work = 20% Quizzes & Tests = 20% Final Exam = 20%
