Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
SONS OF THUNDER, SON OF FEAR
Last week Mark “made an example” of James and John, the sons of thunder. In today’s
Gospel passage he gives us an example of faith in Bartimaeus, whose name means “son of fear” (our
English word “timid” is in there). Most of us can identify with James and John during those times
when we would like to acquire or think we have obtained places of honor and authority. We can also identify with those
times we are timid, fearful, unsure. Perhaps because he was sightless, Bartimaeus was able to tell that there was a certain
something special and out of the ordinary coming down the road that day. Like most blind people of his time, he spent his
days begging for alms or food, hoping to get enough to sustain him for one more day. So he had nothing to lose in crying
out to Jesus for help, and in accepting Jesus’ invitation to come and be healed.
SHHHHHHHH . . .
Scripture scholars have long noted the “Messianic secret” in Mark’s Gospel, wherein Jesus attempts to silence
people who have discerned his true identity. In today’s miracle—the last Jesus will perform in Mark’s Gospel before
entering Jerusalem to meet his suffering and death—Mark reverses this pattern. When Bartimaeus cries out to Jesus, Son
of David, it is the crowd that tries to silence him. This time, however, Jesus himself invites Bartimaeus, who has already
displayed his faith in crying out to Jesus for healing, to come forward, to be vocal about his faith and to regain his sight.
Giving up everything he has (for a beggar, his cloak), Bartimaeus does come forward to “see” Jesus’ identity revealed,
and to go forth proclaiming the Good News of his renewed life. Last week we learned that true discipleship exists in
living for the service of others; this week we learn that true discipleship is in accepting the invitation to faith in Jesus, and
going forth to shout that faith to everyone.
Today’s Readings: Jeremiah 31:7–9; Psalm 126:1–6; Hebrews 5:1–6; Mark 10:46–52

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners,
The call and the response. This weekend
we call out to the Lord and He calls to us.
Bartimaus, the blind man asks for Jesus's
help and Jesus responds, Jesus calls to
Bartimaeus and he responds. This man is
healed, given sight and follows Jesus. How
do we respond to the daily call of the Lord?
Two reminders! First, the time changes
next weekend and the Saturday evening Mass
time at St. Michael will change the
following Saturday to 4:30 pm. Secondly,
mark your calendars for the Mission to be
held at St. Michael. As our Church year
winds down this will be an opportunity to
grow in our faith and prepare for the
business of the upcoming holidays.
Please remember in your prayers Kil
(Kim) Masters and her family as they mourn
the passing of their husband and Father, Bob
Masters of St. Francis Xavier and also the
family of Charles and Joyce Bower of St.
Michael as they mourn the loss of their
loved ones. May God embrace them in His
loving grace.
Fr. Tully
Also please remember the upcoming Mission to be
held at St. Michael in November. All are invited to
attend the three evenings and I encourage you
not only to take part in the mission, but to
encourage your family and friends to participate
as well. A special invitation to those who are “lax”
in the practice of the faith may be an
encouragement to give the Church another look.
God Bless all you do this week and always,
Fr. Tully
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Weekend of October 24-25, 2015
After healing the blind man in today’s Gospel Jesus
told him to go, to be on his way. But the man decided
to follow Jesus. Being a disciple of Jesus is a choice.
The stewardship way of life likewise involves a choice,
in fact many choices. We choose to be grateful, we
choose to live generously, and we choose to trust that
God will always provide for our needs. These are three
choices central to the stewardship way of life. What
choices will we make this week that give witness to our
decision to follow Christ?

During this month of October, Respect Life Month,
we ask for Mary's intercession to help us to build
a culture of life and civilization of love.
O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of
the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life.
Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers
of babies not allowed to be born,
of the poor whose lives are made difficult,
of men and women who are victims of brutal
violence, of the elderly and the sick killed
by indifference or out of misguided mercy.
Grant that all who believe in your Son
may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and
love to the people of our time.
A Prayer for Our Troops”
Dear Lord… We thank you for the lives and service of
our men and women in the Armed Forces. Strengthen
them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s way
to protect our nation and way of life. May they face each
day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus did:
with courage dignity and faith. And if it be Your will
when their work is through bring them safely home.
Lord please also bless the families of our troops. Reward
them generously for their sacrifices which are known
only to You. May we never forget those who have paid
the ultimate price for our freedom and safety: those who
have died in the service of our country. May they rest in
peace forever with You in Your kingdom. Amen
