Synopsis
The story is about an old
beggar named Mang Serapio,
who is in a Federation. The
conflict arises when the
Federation accuses Mang
Serapio of a crime, a crime that
he claims he does not know
about.
As the story revolves, the
two questioners or investigators,
floods Mang Serapio with
questions to make him admit his
crime. When the crime has been
resolved, it became a laughing
matter of the Federation.

that viewed human existence
as meaningless and treated
language as an inadequate
means of communication.
Man seeks some measure of
happiness in a reasonable and
predictable world, what he
seems to get is unhappiness
in a chaotic and unpredictable
one.


Absurdism stressed that the
world is unreasonable,
illogical, incongruous, and out
of harmony.
The word “absurd” then,
meant not ridiculous, but
without meaning.

Symbol
Blinding of Mang Serapio
It symbolizes how those who are in
power become abusive by limiting the
abilities of the poor.
The Trial Itself
It is a symbol of inequality and
manipulation of justice.
Conflict


Man vs. Man - It illustrates
what a man can do to hurt
another man just because of
status and greed.
Man vs. Society - Social
stratification is present in
almost all society, and it
happens that Serapio is a
beggar and a lot of people are
"more" powerful than him.
The conflicts of the play were
not really resolved. The sense
of relief was present when,
after a very long time, Serapio
was found innocent. Still, more
powerful people found holes
just to punish him. In the end
Serapio was blinded because
of a very odd reason or crime,
having hope and dreams

ay bulag sa
katarungan.”
In
our
society,
underprivileged
men
are
merciless at the hands of those
with power. Corruption in the
Philippines and the system is
evident. No matter what would
happen in his trial, he would be
acquitted
guilty
and
be
punished. He basically stood
no chance and he was left at
the mercy of the authorities
who
cheat
the
system
(Manzano, 2012).

change in the federation he is in, but
fails just as he tries.

him
questions though they only
listen to things they want to
hear and disregard Serapio’s

The Hukom’s role is basically just to
convict Serapio guilty, regardless of
how he defends himself. As quoted,
“Pormalidad na rin ho ang hatol ko.”

Serapio in conversation with his
daughter, attempting to convict him
guilty.

She claims to have witnessed
Serapio in conversation with his
