The Lovely Bones Grief Analysis Assignment
Objective: Analyze the five stages of grief that each of the characters experience throughout the novel.
Directions: For each character, find at least two quotes that support each of the five stages of grief. In order to receive full
credit, each character must have ten quotes total. You must follow MLA format. Here’s an example of MLA formatting:
“’You need help, Abigail,’ my grandmother said after having eaten the first real meal my mother had cooked since my
disappearance’” (114).
If it’s not formatted in this manner, you will be deducted one point for every mistake made. For example, if you forget the
page number, you’ll be deducted on point. If you forget the page number, then you’ll forget to put the period outside the
parenthesis, which means you’ll get two points deducted.
Not all of the characters show their grief in the same manner or in the same order. It’s important that you keep up with
this chart as we continue to read the novel. This assignment is a work in progress. We will review this (almost) every day
at the end of the class period.
I will give you more characters as we progress through the novel.
