Fall Semester 2006 My husband, Steve, and daughter, Andi-Kate, from the top of Madison County—home of EKU! Hiking with ALL my children—Whiskey, Coy, and Andi-Kate While doing sand topdressing research (to control earthworm casting) with my students –we discovered one of our sand types is forming a layer in the soil. We’ve started building a golf hole on campus—this is the way we get to the tee boxes during the construction phase. I thought I’d show you what a day of building a golf hole is like… 1st We stick one of the Bobcats in the pond Tyler A. takes prideful ownership of his mistake. (Tyler is actually an excellent Bobcat operator so this could have happened to anyone.) Of course, then we’ve got to get it out But this proves easy enough to do with the right equipment William offers some advice while Matt S. cleans up in the background Uh oh! In our double scoop Bobcat plan April has managed to hit a sprinkler head. Its okay though— Matt & Alan quickly dig it out. Tyler E. says he’ll fix it if I get him the parts. Besides working on the golf hole, this class has gone on a some field trips. Here we are visiting Doug Bradley. Doug shows us the buried Sportsgrass fiber on the sidelines Students posing on the Georgetown College/Bengals training camp field. A picture of the field as we walk back to the van We also visited Keeneland Race Course. The horse sales are going on so that’s what is on the screen. Sept. 22nd was a freaky weather day in Ky— Here it is 11:00 a.m. pouring the rain & freezing A photo of the new Polytrack with the turf course in the background. Sammy Garland was our wonderful host and kept us dry in the Grandstand. My Freshmen Orientation class on the EKU Challenge Course The goals of the Challenge Course include trying to come up with solutions to “acid pond” problems, Learning to work together, and stuffing your classmates through tiny rope holes— which fortunately turned out to be very fun! Here my husband is helping me set up electric fencing for Cow Patty Bingo—A EKU Turf Club Fundraiser. The students prepared the field the day before. I would love to show you a picture of the actual event but we barely got the cow out of the trailer before she deposited her gift. Kari Nesmith won half the pot. The other half went to the Turf Club for travel to the National Conferences— which are in San Antonio With my daughter on some Ky Agritourism Helping host the KTC high school turf tour while at the Kentucky Turfgrass Conference in Bowling Green, KY 1st We visited Crosswinds Then caught up with Sammy Montgomery (EKU grad & TORO rep) while he was checking out the equipment Gabe, the asst. supt. at Crosswinds, explaining the various golf equipment To the left and back of Gabe is Dr. Paul Woosley, (my brother-in-law and WKU turf professor) and to the right of Gabe is J.W. Collins (EKU grad and Bunton seed rep) Gabe showing how to use a stimpmeter to measure green speed Our host at the Lover Lane Soccer Complex on the KTC turf tour Wandering the fields… Lost River Cave was also on the turf tour… No turf BUT The boat ride through the cave was entertaining & educational Casey Wiley winner of the Bluegrass Golf Course Superintendent’s Association Scholarship with Jim Cox, CGCS [BGCSA & Arlington (EKU’s golf course) super.] At the same meeting Jim was voted in as the new President of the Kentucky Turfgrass Council
