Trip to the Art Show
1 I had never been to the big art museum before. We walked up the white marble steps to the huge
front door. It was great! The ceiling seemed like it was 100 feet high! Each room was full of beautiful
art. There must have been 1,000 paintings!
2 On Tuesday my Aunt Lil picked me up early. She took me to a fast food place for breakfast. I usually
eat good food, but we were in a hurry. “You don’t want to be hungry,” she said. We have a lot of
beautiful art to see today.
3 The paintings really were fine. Each one seemed more special than the ones before it. But it was the
mobiles that I thought were the best. They hung from the ceiling on strong wires. When the breeze hit
them, they moved. I thought they were
_ to watch.
4 I asked Aunt Lil to tell me more about the mobiles. She told me about a man named Alexander Calder.
He made playful mobiles with shapes such as fish. Calder became a famous artist. I really like mobiles.
I sat and watched one for almost an hour!

SPI 301.3.4 Supporting Sentence
Polar Bears
1 Everyone knows that polar bears have white fur, right? Actually, the answer is no. The hairs on their
body are hollow tubes. These tube-like hairs reflect light. Since their surroundings are a backdrop of
snow and ice, the bears look white to a person’s eyes.
2 Polar bears are hunters. That means they eat other animals. The main food a polar bear eats is seals.
They also eat walruses, whales, and even some plants. In one way polar bears are like bears that live
in warmer climates, raccoons, and people. All of these animals will eat both meat and plants.
Raccoons often steal food from people’s trash cans.
3 For many reasons a polar bear is well-suited to its Arctic home. Its thick fur coat keeps it warm and
makes it difficult for the bears to be seen. The polar bear is a great swimmer. It also has thick, webbed
feet that help it walk on cold, frozen turf and swim in the icy water. However, polar bears are in
trouble. Their numbers keep going down. If the bears are so well-suited to their homes, why are they
in danger? Some of the danger comes from hunters, but the main problem is loss of habitat. As the
polar ice melts, the bears have less and less space to live and hunt. Many people are now worried
about the melting ice.

SPI 301.2.1 Main Idea of Speech
Wendy's Speech on Cleaning Your Room
Do you like to clean your room? Of course not--who does? Well, I am here to offer you some ways to
help make cleaning your room much more fun.
When you first walk into your room, what do you see? I bet you see clothes on the floor, an overfilled
trashcan and possibly some dirty dishes from snacks. This is how you can begin. First, look at the
clothes lying all over the room. Think about why it is important to pick them up. Is it a problem because
your mother hates looking at the mess, or is it because they are dirty by stepping on them when you
walk through the room? You can solve both problems by making a colored code path with your clothes.
Make a walking path around your room, starting with the first color of the rainbow and then continue
until your path has all colors of the rainbow. If you do not have any clothes on the floor that are the
color you need, then go to your closet and pull some out. This will make your room very colorful. I
believe your mother will like your art. Now for the dishes, make a corner of the room your "kitchen."
Pile the dirty dishes there and invite your dog to play dishwasher. Once the dishes are clean, you can
take them to the kitchen for a snack refill. The trashcan problem is a little more difficult. Take all of the
trash lying on the floor and make a collage. This can give your room a new look while cleaning at the
same time.
Your mom might not like your new way of cleaning. Though, I bet she will like your new look and then
you can stay out of trouble.

Candace's Speech on Doing Your Homework (rough draft that may contain errors)
Why do homework? Here is what I think about homework. I feel we need to do homework to work on
things we have learned at school. This way we can really learn what we were taught. I know that
everyone hates homework. It can be fun if you are practicing something you have learned. This can
help us to be ready for something new the next day. I think if we know what has been taught, then
school would not be as boring. We would not have to go over things we have talked about the day
before. That can be very dull and boring.
Now that I have said that I do not mind doing homework, I want to make something very clear. Even
though homework is ok, I do not feel we need to do hours and hours of it. This is why children do not
like to do homework. They see the hours in front of them and they will not t do their homework
because it takes too long. After school, we want to play some and spend time with our families. If we do
not have a break from school, it can become too much and we will shut down. I feel our bodies need to
move and our brain needs a rest to works at its best for us.

So, I would like to end this being very clear. Homework can be a good thing, only if it is a little each
night. Please do not take away our time to play or spend time with friends and family. I promise you
will get more from us in class, if you allow us to have time for other things that we enjoy!
89. What is the main reason Candace wrote this speech?
A.

C.
D.
Homework is very important, and we should have many hours of it each night.
Homework is a waste, and we should never have to do it.
Homework should be given to learn something new, so you will not be behind in school.

Ben's Speech on Eating Healthy
I am here today to ask you to eat healthy foods. I have had a terrible thing happen in my family because
my father was not taking care of himself. My father died of a heart attack. This means that a place in his
heart was not letting the blood flow. This caused his heart to stop. The doctors were not able to fix his
heart because of all of the harm that was done.
I feel that could have been stopped if he had exercised and had eaten the right kinds of food. We all
know how important it is to exercise. So, I will not take this time to talk about that topic. My concern is
more about foods. I am not sure we know the role that foods play in helping or hurting our bodies.
Foods have vitamins and minerals. These vitamins and minerals are what help to feed our bodies. Some
foods have lots of them and some do not. The more the body is given the right things, the better it will
work for us. If the body is not given the right diet, then it cannot work properly. The insides of our body
will not be able to do their job, which can then cause them to stop working. As you have just heard, that
is what happens to my father's heart. He did not use foods to give his body what it needed and it could
not work for him.
Now, my father is not with us, and my family and I miss him very much. Please talk with your family
about eating the right foods. If you work together, then it could be lots of fun learning about the foods.

It wasn't very long before he saw that his brothers and sisters grew little legs. "I wonder if
that is happening to me?" he whispered. Sure enough, when he saw his reflection in the

began looking for food among the plants.
A few days went by, and Tommy found it hard to breathe in the water. He had the urge to
