Exploring Nationalism

Film Viewing

A number of films are viewed throughout the semester to support students’ learning. Viewing carefully selected videos meets the visual literacy curriculum objectives while at the same time providing concrete examples to support the specific knowledge objectives. The following is a list of films that we may watch during the semester along with the rating and curriculum objective.

Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion (Not Rated): Used to illustrate various understandings of ethnic nations, the differences between civic and ethic nations, self-determination, sovereignty, and crimes against humanity. Biases are explored.

The French Revolution (Not Rated): History Channel documentary focusing on the

French Revolution. Used to give the historical timeline of the revolution and a supplement to the factors of French nationalism.

For King and Empire Episode 3 (Not Rated)

: Used to illustrate Canada’s role in Vimy

Ridge and a supplement to the factors of Canadian Nationalism.

Storming Juno (PG) : Used to illustrate Canada’s contribution to D-Day and a supplement to the external and internal factors of Canadian nationalism.

Paris 1919 (Not Rated): Used to show how the terms of war settlement were handled by the major powers.

Harvest of Despair: Used to illustrate the Ukrainian Holocaust.

Love, Hate, and Propaganda (Rated PG): Used to discuss propaganda during World War

II as well as indoctrination, charismatic leaders, ultranationalism, and total war.

Ghosts of Rwanda (Not Rated): Frontline documentary on the Rwandan genocide. Used to discuss internationalism, and the international response to crimes against humanity, the

United Nations, and peacekeeping.

This list does not include shorter video clips that are shown during class time that focus on a variety of subjects within the course.

If you, or your students, are concerned with viewing any of these films please contact me directly and arrangements will be made to meet those concerns. An alternate research assignment related to the topic will be given to students who choose to not view the film .
