I Corinthians 12:1-11
Definitions
(From “Concerning Spiritual Gifts” by Kenneth E. Hagin)
The Word of Wisdom - A supernatural revelation by the Spirit of God concerning the divine
purpose in the mind and will of God. God reveals His purpose and plan for the future through
the Word of Wisdom.
The Word of Knowledge – The supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts in the
mind of God.
The Discerning of Spirits – Insight into the spirit world.
The Gift of Faith – Those who operate in the Gift of Faith believe God in such a way that He
honors their word as His own and miraculously brings it to pass. The Gift of Faith is a
supernatural endowment by the Holy Spirit where that which is uttered by man or spoken by God
shall eventually come to pass.
The Gifts of Healing – The purpose of the Gifts of Healings is to deliver the sick and to destroy
the words of the devil in the human body.
The Working of Miracles – A supernatural intervention in the ordinary course of nature, a
temporary suspension of the accustomed order through the Sprit of God.
The Gift of Prophecy – Supernatural utterance in a known tongue.
Divers Kinds of Tongues – A supernatural utterance by the Holy Spirit in languages never
learned by the speaker, not understood by the mind of the speaker nor necessarily always
understood by the hearer.
The Interpretation of Tongues – The supernatural interpretation by the Holy Spirit the meaning
of an utterance in other tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Don’t Be Ignorant

God does not want us ignorant of spiritual things. (Verse 1)
We all have a past. (Verse 2)
There are different gifts, BUT the same Spirit. (Verse 4)
The gifts are ministered differently, BUT it’s the same Lord. (Verse 5)
There are different ways that the gifts operate, BUT it is the same God that’s at work.
(Verse 6)
F. God wants us to profit. (Verse 7)
a. Profit means to: to be of service or advantage; to derive benefit; to gain.
(Webster’s Dictionary)
b. What are we to profit over? What are we to gain the advantage of? The world, the
flesh and the devil.
G. To help us gain the advantage over the world, the flesh and the devil, God gave us nine
(9) gifts. (Verses 8-10)
H. Even though there are nine gifts, it is only one Spirit that is doing the work. He is the one
who divides (separates, distributes) as He wants to. In other words, God by the Holy
Spirit is the One Who delegates the gifts to people. Not man. (Verse 11)
Assignment #1: Read 1 Corinthians 12.
1 Corinthians 14 – Order in the Church
A. Follow after love. Desire to prophesy. Develop a hunger to prophesy. (Verse 1)
a. By asking God to help you prophesy.
b. Be around others who prophesy.
c. Develop a consistent Bible reading schedule.
d. Have a consistent prayer life. Talk to God. Let Him talk back to you.
e. Worship God.
f. Sing to God.
g. Prophesy by faith.
B. Praying in an unknown tongue is talking to God. Man cannot understand you. (Verse 2)
C. When you prophesy you speak to people to: (Verse 3)
a. Edification – The act of edifying.
i. Edify is to instruct or improve spiritually; to build; to establish.
b. Exhortation – An act or instance of exhorting; language intended to incite and
encourage.
i. Exhort is to incite by argument or advice; urge strongly; to give warnings
or advice; make urgent appeals.
c. Comfort – Strengthening aid; assistance; support; consolation in time of trouble or
worry; a feeling of relief or encouragement.
D. When you speak in tongues, you edify (build up, establish) yourself. When you
prophesy, you edify (build up, establish) the church. (Verse 4)
E. It’s very important that the church be edified. (Verse 5)

a. God wants us to speak in tongues.
b. But, He wants us to prophesy even more.
c. Why? So that the church can be edified.
When you are around people, don’t just start speaking in tongues unless you are going to
interpret it. (Verses 6-11)
You want the gifts to operate in you? Good. However, excel to edify the church.
a. Excel – to be superior to; surpass in accomplishment or achievement; to exceed.
When you speak in tongues, pray to interpret so that others can be edified. (Verses 12-17)
In the church assembly: (Verse 26)

b. A doctrine
c. A tongue
d. A revelation
e. An interpretation
f. Let all things be done to edify (to build, to establish)
Covet to prophesy. (Verse 30)
a. Covet – To desire. (Webster’s Dictionary)
Let all things be done decently and in order. (Verse 31)
The Gift of Prophecy – Supernatural utterance in a known tongue.
A. Don’t quench (extinguish, stifle or suppress) the spirit. (I Thessalonians 5:19)
B. Don’t despise prophesying. (I Thessalonians 5:20)

learned by the speaker, not understood by the mind of the speaker nor necessarily always
understood by the hearer.
The Interpretation of Tongues – The supernatural interpretation by the Holy Spirit the meaning
of an utterance in other tongues.
A. Interpretation. Not a translation.
B. Someone can speak in a long tongue, but the interpretation can be short. Vice Versa:
short tongue but a long interpretation.
C. In your own prayer time, when you praying in tongues, ask God for the interpretation.
