History of the International
Baccalaureate®
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) was founded in
Geneva, Switzerland, in 1968 as a non-profit
educational foundation.
A group of talented, forward-thinking teachers at the
International School of Geneva, with assistance from
several other international schools, created the IB
Diploma Programme. What started life as a single
program for internationally mobile students preparing
for university has today
grown into three programs
for students aged 3 to 19.
Johnson’s IB Programmes
• Middle Years (MYP)
– For 9th and 10th graders
– All students accepted enter the MYP as 9th graders
– May live anywhere in Johnson’s IB zone
• Career (IBCP)
– For 11th and 12th graders who live in Johnson’s
attendance zone and didn’t apply for IB in 8th grade
• Diploma (DP)
– For 11th and 12th graders who entered the MYP in 9th
grade or who apply for the DP during 9th or 10th grade

(started at SCJ in 2009)
The IB
Middle Years Programme (MYP)
The IB Middle Years Programme, for
students aged 11 to 16, provides a
framework of academic challenge that
encourages students to embrace and
understand the connections between
traditional subjects and the real world, and
become critical and reflective thinkers.
The Curriculum
The program consists of eight subject
groups:
1. Language Acquisition
2. Language and Literature
3. Individuals and Societies
4. Sciences
5. Mathematics
6. Arts
7. Physical and Health Education
8. Design
MYP & AP
Our 9th grade IB hopefuls are currently taking
AP Human Geography. Our other AP
offerings include Psychology and European
History.
The MYP Personal Project
By the end of the 10th grade students will complete their
MYP Personal Projects, which allows them to
demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have
developed. The students will do the research portion
during the 9th grade and create and present the project
during the 10th grade. This project allows the student to
research what he/she is truly passionate about and has
three components:
1. The project (tryptich, documentary, original work or art,
research paper)
2. Process journal
3. Report
You can see some of the past Personal Project topics on
the next slide.
