S.T.E.P.S Program 2013 { By Molly Meczywor and Kalie Lynn French Summer Transition Educational Program for Success Literacy Skills: Strategies for Success Curriculum STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math Service Learning Career Exploration Social-Emotional Skills FOCUS: 5 – Strive to Be a 5 Attendance Participation in Service Learning Project Completion of all Academic Assignments Complete work in Success Binder Complete a Final Project 5 Criteria Group of up to 40 students (36 total) Three Weeks, 8:30-1:30 with lunch provided Transportation provided Week 1: SKILLS and OBSERVATION Week 2: RESEARCH and PLAN Week 3: ACT, REFLECT, DEMONSTRATE Structure: Week 1: SKILLS, OBSERVE, INVESTIGATE Quote and Build-aLearner Activity….. OBSERVE: What is a community? Use graphing to represent results. What skills do I need to get into college? Off to MCLA! Students will analyze data collected throughout the week and create a bar graph to represent assigned prompt. Week 1 Assessment Week 2: WHAT ARE OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS? INVESTIGATE/PLAN/AC T Service Silent Activity – what’s important to us? PROJECTS: Recycling Water Quality Food Lunch Program Park Clean Up Homeless Animals/Animal Care Looking at solutions….Group Work Students will write a Persuasive Letter to a person of importance relating to project Students will create a Rhetorical poster relating to project Week 2 Assessments: Week 3: Reflect/Demonstrate “I’ve gotten better with the groups and that’s thanks to the STEPS program. STEPS helped me in a lot of ways. Like I wasn’t really a good listener and that’s to the whole ‘active listening’ thing I’ve gotten better. We learned how to be polite. They taught us that it’s important to think about our future. I thought it was interesting because we got to ask students and faculty what they thought of the school food and even if they ate school lunch. Our group volunteered at the Berkshire Food Project to see what other organizations consider healthy and we put food in bags to give to people who need food. We created suggestion boxes for the cafeteria.
