LIBR266 Opening Day Collection Hilary S. Henkin San Jose State University Page 2 Opening Day Collection Suntown Public Library Subject Area: Home Interior Décor and Design Introduction Community description This report is focused around a non-actual public library (We’ll call it Suntown Library). Suntown Library is one branch of fifteen in a medium-sized library system. The community encompasses households of many age groups and incomes, including people who’ve lived in the neighborhood for decades, young families, and singles who find satisfactory job and social opportunities in the area. While the demographic includes a small mix of nationalities, no enclaves from other countries have established themselves. Research has determined that 68% of the residents own their homes, with some residents in the same home for years, and others new to the responsibility. While many choose newly-built homes, the community has a thriving older-home market as well. Recently, the library staff has noticed an increase in requests for materials related to home improvement, particularly updating the appearance of the interior, guidance in selecting style and color, how to do specific techniques, and creative ideas for specific rooms. An analysis of the library’s current collection for this subject area revealed that many of the materials are over twenty years old, and many current topics and trends are not represented at all. Accordingly, the Suntown Library Board of Trustees approved a revision of this section, with a budget of $1000.00. The following materials are recommended as initial additions to this collection. They will provide a foundation upon which to build, and provide both basic and intermediate guidance, and reference to the user community. These materials have also been chosen because of their “readability”, to provide a pleasant user experience while supplying information, ideas, and procedures. Collection Objectives Description The new collection will provide library patrons with information on improving the look, function, and organization of their home interiors. It will assist them in choosing color, style, and furniture/décor. It will include economical choices and options, with guidance on upgrading the look of their homes. Intended Scope: The new collection will consist of adult non-fiction materials. Selection Criteria: The following criteria will be used in selecting materials for this collection: Page 3 Relevance and subject matter: The materials chosen will be relevant to the subject area by the description above, and include ideas implementable by this patron community, both in terms of budget and skill level. This initial collection will not extend to materials about major remodeling or improving the home’s exterior. As part of updating the collection, the Head Librarian will evaluate current materials for retention and weeding. Publication Date: A range of materials will be selected, with an emphasis on recent (less than ten years) publications. Where suggested materials are more than ten years old, particular analysis will be paid to current relevance. While some aspects of this subject area, such as techniques and history, have extended time value, others such as décor trends should be more current. Balance of topics covered, relative to other materials selected Attention will be paid to achieve a balance of topics and materials: acquiring enough materials in each area to provide a foundation, while providing a range of techniques, styles, and references. Formats The collection will include a range of formats, including books, serials (magazines) and DVD videos. In addition to standard editions, large-format print editions will be included if available. While no electronic-format books are recommended during this initial collection creation, the community will be surveyed to determine which formats would be the most in demand: Kindle, eBooks, Nook, etc. Such materials may be acquired during the next phase of this collection upgrade. However, given the highly visual nature of this subject area and the reduced size and quality of any electronic viewing screen, particular attention should be paid to whether each specific title would be satisfactory. Because the VHS media format is no longer supported, no VHS tapes will be included. Due to the nature of the subject area, no audio or cartographic materials will be included. Usage Expectations Books, serials over one year old, and multimedia will be circulating copies. Serials less than one year old will be restricted to in-library use. Based on interest expressed by patrons, this collection should circulate frequently. Statement Regarding Gifts While the library is always willing to accept cash or in-kind gifts, any such contributions are to be evaluated according to the overall Collection Development Policy, and the criteria stated above. The Library will have authority to use any donated materials in any way it deems appropriate, and is not obligate to add them to the collection. Statement Regarding Challenges While few challenges to this particular collection are expected, librarians receiving any such comments should be guided by the Administrative Policies Manual. The patron must complete a Re-Evaluation Request Form, and be given a copy of the Page 4 Re-Evaluation Request Procedures handout. The Head Librarian and the Board will handle the complaint according to standard procedures. Evaluation Measurements When the new collection is accessible, library staff will be alerted to monitor patron response and feedback. After the new collection has been in use for five months, circulation records will be analyzed, as the first criteria for evaluating usage. The library staff will also be surveyed for any informal feedback received. The Trustees recommend a community survey six to eight months after the collection is re-opened, to determine community awareness of the collection, and usage among those who are aware. Based on this survey, future acquisitions to this collection may be modified, based on refined new user needs. Selection Tool / Resource List Because this collection will consist of non-academic adult materials, selection tools for trade and popular publications are the most useful. The selection tools listed below are accessible without subscription or registration. These were used because their databases include the lifestyle books and materials common to this subject area. 1. Magazines.com http://www.magazines.com/ This website sells retail subscriptions to a wide range of over 2000 serials (magazines, journals, and newspapers), as well as books and gifts. Users can search for a specific title, or browse a category and format. The selection is in-depth and includes specialized and high-end titles as well as popular materials. Since many bricks-and-mortar suppliers carry only the most popular titles, this site provides access to others which could be popular in a library setting, either because they are more expensive, or because they are harder to find in the single-copy market. In addition, magazines.com could serve as a jobber or distributor, managing many of this library’s subscriptions as a single source. 2. Taunton Press http://www.taunton.com/ This publisher is very highly respected in the community of home improvement and hobbies. Their current catalog includes 25 books in Interior Design and Decorating, and 79 Home Improvement books (there is some overlap of the two categories). They currently offer 20 titles as eBooks. The Taunton Press focuses on hands-on projects, both inside and outside the home. In addition to their many books, they have four high-end quarterly magazines: Fine Woodworking, Fine Home-building, Fine Cooking, and Fine Gardening, all at the apex of their genres. Their books similarly reflect projects their readers will do themselves, with great pride. 3. House Beautiful Books Archive http://www.housebeautiful.com/archive/shopping/books/ . This book list includes a wide range of books about home style, color, and related topics, from a variety of publishers. Page 5 4. Our Favorite Design Books http://www.housebeautiful.com/shopping/books/our-favorite-design-books (slideshow). This slideshow included books from a variety of publishers, all highly recommended. The choices were particularly relevant, and also useful in providing references to other publishers. 5. HGTV Books http://marketplace.hgtv.com/HGTV_Merchandise/Books This website for the cable tv channel enables users to order books written by current and previous show hosts, through retail booksellers. It’s likely that the materials available would change as the network programming changes. 6. Amazon.com Amazon, as a retail bookseller, offers one of the largest books and media catalogs available. In addition to professional reviews, it also accepts consumer-submitted reviews, so can provide excellent analyses of most of its materials. It also offers complete metadata, to simplify ordering. 7. Booksamillion.com 8. Architectural Digest: Reviewed but not used. This selection tool is styled toward a higher-income demographic. 9. Barnes and Noble.com 10. Best Interior Design Books http://www.housebeautiful.com/shopping/books/best-interior-design-books-1110 Publisher List This Publisher List provides an excellent range of subject-relevant materials. Several specific imprints for major publishers are included, whose foci are the lifestyle books of high printing quality and content which are popular in this subject area. Generally these imprints specialize in lifestyle books -- for this subject area as well as other related subject areas. Random House 1745 Broadway New York, NY 10019 (212) 782-9000 Crown Trade Group (division of Random House) Four imprints of the Crown Trade Group are included here, producing materials within this subject area: Clarkson Potter is, according to their website (Random House, 1995-2010), “the leading publisher of cookbooks, lifestyle books, and gift books. We cover topics from decorating and design to fashion, style, and gardening. Our authors include Ina Garten, Martha Stewart, Giada DeLaurentiis, Bobby Flay, Rachael Ray, Colin Cowie, and Page 6 Celerie Kemble, among others, whose books are published to be classics.” They currently list 66 titles in their House and Home category (which does include books by other Crown Publishing Group imprints). Several books by Clarkson Potter met the criteria for this collection, and are expected to be popular. Three Rivers Press is, according to their website (Random House, 1995-2010), “the paperback imprint of the Crown Publishing Group. It publishes original titles as well as paperback reprints. Three Rivers Press is named for the Harlem, East and Hudson rivers that border Manhattan, as well as the three Crown hardcover imprints that initially gave rise to Three Rivers' list.” Some books by Three Rives Press were in the preliminary list, but were not ultimately selected. They may be added later. Watson-Guptill is, according to their website (Random House, 1995-2010), “the preeminent publisher of how-to books in the arts: art technique, fine art, design, comics, cartooning, animation, crafts, film, and fashion. Its … beautifully designed and lavishly illustrated books, authored by experts in their respective fields, are as inspirational and aspirational as they are instructive. Award-winning authors and consumers alike are attracted to Watson-Guptill, known for producing books with some of the highest editorial, design, and production values in the industry.” The selected books by Watson-Guptill are expected to in high demand, because of their nature as foundation references. Monacelli Press is, according to their website (Random House, 1995-2010), “a leading publisher of books on architecture, the fine arts, interior design, landscape architecture, photography, and graphic design.” . . .” The Monacelli Press has published more than 250 books since it was established in 1994.” They are designer-focused; and produce very attractive books. Like Three Rivers Press, books by Monacelli Press were in the preliminary list, but not ultimately selected. They may be added later. Gibbs Smith Publishing PO Box 667 Layton, Utah 84041 800.748.5439 toll free 801.544.9800 phone 801.544.5582 fax According to Publishers Weekly (2010), “Gibbs Smith Publishing, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, is regarded as one of the most distinctive lifestyle publishers in the U.S.” According to their Facebook page (2011), “Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2009, Gibbs Smith specializes in beautifully illustrated lifestyle books covering topics such as interior design, architecture, cooking, children's, home, green/sustainable and more.” This publisher focuses on larger-scale books, with abundant full-color photographs, written by well-respected experts in their fields. The subjects are current and very focused: bungalow living, green houses, and different styles of home interior design such as French Country, and Arts and Crafts are some examples. They cover both interiors and exteriors, and building styles, and even address more exotic home styles such as treehouses and yurts. They currently list 107 books in their Design and Home Reference category. Page 7 The books appear to be in-depth, designed for people already knowledgeable about the topics, or seriously wanting to become more knowledgeable. Octopus Publishing Group Limited Endeavour House 189 Shaftesbury Avenue London WC2H 8JY Tel.: +44 (0)20 7632 5400 Fax.: +44 (0)20 7632 5405 According to their website (2011), “Octopus is a leading publisher of illustrated books. We are comprised of nine imprints, and as a group have extensive experience of working with high profile authors, trusted partners and associations to produce exciting, market leading books. Our imprints each have their own identity and all publish highly successful titles of outstanding quality and content… “ Two imprints of Octopus Publishing were used for this collection: Conran Octopus (Octopus, 2011) “was founded by Sir Terence Conran and Paul Hamlyn to publish cutting-edge books of the very highest quality in both content and design, and today the core philosophy remains unchanged.” Godsfield Press (Octopus, 2011) “publishes inspirational and practical mind body spirit titles covering areas such as spirituality and religion, personal growth, alternative health and healing, divination and humour.” Both Octopus imprints provided valuable additions to this collection. Their British origin provides a different perspective than the American books, and thus be in high demand. Order List The selection guidelines for this collection specified including some large-print editions if possible. However, in the lifestyle books and related categories which apply to this subject, no large-print editions were found. Pursuant to patron requests, materials by “celebrity” interior designers were considered. Some did not mesh well with the collection criteria, but others seemed to be a good blend and have been included.
