Fayette Academy will provide a tuba for your student, as these tubas tend to be prohibitively expensive. All Beginners: If you purchase an instrument over the summer, it is important that the student NOT attempt to assemble or play the instrument until students learn to do those things properly in band class. Bad habits are often difficult to break, so parents should help their student resist the urge to play or even hold the instrument until they can be instructed how to do so by Mr. Hinson or a private lesson teacher. For the parents that would like the convenience of renting an instrument from a vendor here at Fayette Academy, a horn drive will be scheduled near the beginning of the school year with a local music store. More specific information as to date and time will be forthcoming. Please keep in mind: While good deals can certainly be found on in the Internet, such as sites like eBay, I recommend parents use caution, as many instruments offered are of inferior quality or need quite a bit of repair work to be made in playable condition. Please purchase/rent one of the brands I have listed, and do so from a reputable vendor. Many music stores that rent also have maintenance plans available, and I HIGHLY recommend this as well. Local recommended stores include (but are not necessarily limited to): Amro, Lane Music, Martin Music, and Saint Fishys. Please avoid purchasing instruments from “big box” retailers such as Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, or Costco, as these businesses often sell inferior brand instruments of questionable quality that are simply not durable or reliable. It is important that a beginner has an instrument that functions properly to avoid frustration and discouragement when first learning how to play. The last obstacle a beginner needs is having to contend with leaky pads, dented slides, misaligned keys, sticky valves, or a whole host of other issues that would make it even more difficult, if not all-out impossible, to learn to play the instrument. It is also important to keep in mind that at this young age, the instrument needs to be robust enough to take the rigors of day-to-day 6th grade use. The brands I have listed above are generally well made and of good quality. Used instruments of the brands I have listed are fine, as long as they are in good playable condition. If you have a used instrument and are unsure as to its condition, please contact Mr. Hinson to set up a time that I can examine it and make an assessment.
