Power Standard: Communicates orally in target language with grade- appropriate language

In the 4 th grade, meeting the expectations of this power standard means that your child can:

 Ask and give information about his/her family

 Ask and tell how to spell words

 Respond appropriately to questions from the teacher and his/her peers

 Ask and tell the profession

 Ask and give information about the location of different establishments

 Describe a family photo, using physical and personality traits

 Present a fictional family tree

 Interview someone pretending to be a famous figure or be interviewed to elicit the following information:

“What is your name? Where do you live? How old are you? Do you have any brothers or sisters? Do you have a pet? Do you like to play sports? What do you

 like/dislike/want/prefer/know how to do?”

Ask and give directions for a given place or location in the city

 Ask and tell the establishments where different products are sold

 Ask and tell the price of something in euros

Power Standard: Demonstrates grade-appropriate command of written language

In the 4 th grade, meeting the expectations of this power standard means that your child can:

 Read simple texts about concrete situations that deal with topics related to the unit with a

 satisfactory level

Identify on a map places in a city: Es el..., mercado, cine…, etc., and will understand what people do in those places

 Write a paragraph about himself/herself acquiring the identity of Dalí (write in the 1 st person) after reading a short biography of Salvador Dalí,

 Read with increased understanding of phrasing, punctuation, content, form, and author's style

 Read and understand a short, simple play or story well enough to outline the main 
 elements of the plot

Power Standard: Able to perform successfully in songs, skits, plays, and dialogs

In the 4 th grade, meeting the expectations of this power standard means that your child can:

 Memorize and sing a song

 Create and perform a dialog with his/her peers, focusing on topics of the unit

 Create a video of the skit with his/her peers using either IMovie or Photo Booth

 Present to the class a picture of his/her family

 Memorize his/her lines and perform in the play about a vacation trip to Madrid

 Watch the videos of the plays, using a rubric in order to learn how to self-assess as well as how to assess the performances of his/her peers

Power Standard: Demonstrates understanding of spoken language

In the 4 th grade, meeting the expectations of this power standard means that your child can:

 Name and describe the members of his/her family and the relationship to each other while showing a family photo

 Understand responses to questions made by his/her peers

 Understand basic instructions related to how to go from one place to another whether by foot or by public transportation

 Understand the main idea of basic messages that are communicated clearly and slowly

Power Standard: Comprehends and utilizes vocabulary from selected narratives

In the 4 th grade, meeting the expectations of this power standard means that your child can:

 Read the mini-story

 Extract information from the mini-story that focuses on a trip to Madrid during the “Día de la

Hispanidad”

 Use vocabulary from the mini-story in context

 Use some vocabulary from the mini-story in a new context

 Answer questions about the above text, including his family and work

 Respond to reading comprehension questions about the mini-story

 Understand both the mini-story and the biography about the family

 Use vocabulary from the stories in context

 Create sentences using the vocabulary in a different context

 Compare and contrast a picture of a family painted by Francisco de Goya from 1800’s, another picture by Carmen Lomas Garza from 1986, and a picture of his/her own family, including physical appearance and personality traits for at least two family members on each painting and picture

Power Standard: Develops an understanding and appreciation of other cultures through the target language

In the 4 th grade, meeting the expectations of this power standard means that your child can:

 Create the two surnames for the children of an imaginary family natural of a Spanish-speaking country

 Understand where two last names are used in the C2 and the benefits of using two last names

 Identify some different cultural aspects of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in Spain such as los belenes, el turrón, la lotería “el Gordo”

 Learn five different Christmas carols to be performed at Barnes and Noble Bookstore

 Explore some Spanish Christmas traditions such as the arrival of "Los Tres Reyes Magos" on the morning of January the sixth, writing a letter to one of the kings asking for presents, and eating "Roscón de Reyes"

 Explore and engage in the celebration of New Year’s Eve celebration in Spain of eating twelve grapes, one for each hour that the clock marks

 Draw a picture that represent his/her likes, dislikes, beliefs, hobbies, and loved ones to design a crest that will later be explained to the class

 Explore typical dances such as merengue, samba, salsa, tango, etc., of selected Spanish-speaking countries
