Genre Studies: Poetry Portfolio Project
DUE Wednesday, February 9th
For this project, you will read and respond to poetry in several different ways. Poetry is meant to
evoke strong emotional reactions. As such, your project will focus on how you respond personally and
intimately with several poems.
The portfolio will include:
1. Cover page
2. Table of Contents- You will create a title for your response to the poem, and put the page number next to it.
Example:
1. All’s Well That Ends Well
1
2. Spring Comfort
3
3. Hollow of the Tree
5
3. Your Responses
a. You will have three full-page written responses to three different poems from the packet. Be sure
to include the original poem before the written response (the poem does not count toward the
length of your response.
b. You will choose one song that relates to a poem from the packet, include the lyrics to the song,
and write a full-page analysis of how the song relates to the poem.
c. You will create a visual artifact relating to a poem from the packet. You must include the poem
title somewhere on the artifact (or written on the back is fine). You will then write a half-page
explanation of your inspiration for the artifact from the poem.
Examples of artifacts: Collages (with photographs, newspaper/magazine cutouts, etc),
Paintings/Drawings/Sketches, Scrapbook page, etc. This will be graded based on creativity and
effort, as well as the explanation of how the artifact relates to the poem.
d. You will write a ½ page reflection on your feelings and attitudes about poetry. Feel free to include
your previous experiences with poetry, if you enjoy writing poetry, your experiences with poetry in
this class, etc. This should be an honest reflection, and please be specific. You may include favorite
poems, poets, etc here as well.
*Your responses should be written in 12 point font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Use formal
English.
The portfolio should include the original poems and your reflections for each. You should compile all of
the information into a folder/notebook/presentation sleeve so that the portfolio is neat in appearance. This
project requires effort, creativity, and analysis/response, and you will be graded based on the fulfillment of
those elements. Please see me ASAP with any questions/concerns about the project. You will present the
portfolio to a group of your peers in class on Wednesday, February 9th.
