Economy
A Powerful Economy Serving a World Capital
In 2010, Qatar had the world's highest GDP per capita, while the economy grew by
19.40%, the fastest in the world. The main drivers for this rapid growth are ongoing
increases in production and exports of natural gas, oil, petrochemicals and related
industries.
The real estate market, with an actual value of USD 55 billion, has been experiencing a
significant boost in virtually all sectors, including:
• A 92% increase in supply of high-rise commercial office towers in 2 years
• A 34% increase in supply of retail space
Looking ahead, Qatar’s economy is expected to keep its upward trend and growth is
likely to continue with Qatar’s overall real GDP projected to grow by 18.6% in 2011,
which is among the highest in the world - driven mainly by continued large expansion in
natural gas production and public investment expenditures.
A staggering USD 160 billion are planned to be spent on development projects in
anticipation for the FIFA World Cup in 2022:

Qatar 2022
The Road to 2022
By winning the bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar has become the first Middle
Eastern and Arab country to host the crowning event of international sports. With just
over 1.7 million inhabitants, Qatar has managed to achieve in a few short years what
nations with illustrious sporting histories have coveted sometimes for decades.
Teams from 32 countries (including Qatar) will compete in 12 state-of-the-art venues in
7 cities across the nation.
More than a subject of national pride, hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup means giving
Qatar’s visitors the best experience of Arabian hospitality Qatar is set to be the biggest
construction site in dollars per square meter, withplans to spend a staggering USD 160
billion on development projects in order to welcome fans from around the world with
the best amenities and entertainment venues:
• USD 35 billion to develop the national railroad
• 240 hotels with over 90,000 rooms
• 12 stadiums with a capacity of over half a million people
• more than USD 20 billion to build and expand roads
Football Stadiums Like the World Has Never Seen
One of the major factors which led to Qatar being considered for the 2022 FIFA World
Cup bidding process was the futuristic and green vision of its proposed stadiums.
Carbon Neutrality
Each stadium will convert solar energy into electricity to provide lighting and a cool
environment for both players and fans. When games are not taking place, the solar
installations will export energy onto the national power grid.
This unique vision opens the way for a wealth of opportunities to all types of suppliers
to push the limits of what is currently considered the norm in stadium construction.
Stadium Exportation
Qatar intends to take parts of these built stadiums and repackage them into smaller
units for exportation to various countries around the globe who may not have access to
such world-class sporting facilities.
This too has never been done before, and so as to avoid the white elephants
phenomena.
