WG6 – Sixth Form Induction Information and Tasks
SUBJECT
Applied Science – OCR course
In this subject you will be expected to: Complete all tasks set by the date given, to the very
best of your ability. Keeping your work organised will be essential, particularly for the portfolio
units. You must be punctual to lessons and arrive fully equipped with your folder, notebook, lab
coat and calculator.
You will need to have an interest in: The role of science in our society and industry; this could
range from healthcare to manufacturing to energy production.

As well as the activities you will complete for your portfolio work you will be expected to read
around the subject and take an interest in current developments in science and organisation
using science.
Past papers will also be available from the start of the course and you should use these to
consolidate your learning.

Examples of Independent Study portfolio tasks:
● Put together a leaflet/poster or presentation on a department in the National Health
Service.
● Research and produce a report on the energy policy of an organisation that is a nondomestic consumer of energy.
Information on Coursework
The AS course consists of three equally weighted units, two of which (constituting 67%) are
portfolio-based. You will complete a variety of tasks over the course of the year that will
contribute evidence towards your portfolios. Deadlines for each of these tasks will be set
throughout the course with the final portfolio deadline on approximately 5th May.
Future Career aspirations linked to this subject are:
If you decide to go to university you could take a degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics,
Biomedical science, Midwifery, Mental Health Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Forensic Science,
Pharmacy, Optometry, Nursing, Physiotherapy or Radiography.
If you want to get a job straight after this course you could work in a hospital laboratory, research
laboratory, a laboratory in a school or college, a forensic science laboratory or a quality control
laboratory.
Induction Task &
Success Criteria
You will be required to complete a report detailing the practical
investigation undertaken during the induction lesson.
Your report will need to include a description of the context of the
investigation, a risk assessment, a description of the procedure and your
observations and your conclusion with supporting calculations.
