Educators will use phenol red as the chemical indicator. Phenol red is red when a solution is basic and turns orange and then yellow if the solution becomes increasingly acidic. Carbon dioxide makes water acidic; phenol red allows us to infer that cellular respiration is taking place. Educators will design their own experiment to test how one variable affects the rate of cellular respiration of sprouted beans. Curriculum Alignment: Outcome 8.4. A discussion of body fat is not limited to observation in horses as the principles apply to cats and dogs and other livestock. Learn how students can learn to body condition score their own pets. We will build on the foundation of what was taught in the “dummies” class and take it to the next level. Instructors will be able to identify and provide maintenance procedures in checking and changing fluids, servicing and changing filters, and identify safe starting/stopping engine procedures. Equine Welfare and Behavior-Dr. Karen Wimbush, Associate Professor - Agricultural Technologies Division; Technology Coordinator, Horse Production & Management, The Ohio State University-ATI How do animal behavior patterns influence how they are handled? Learn firsthand how to properly handle horses based on their behavior patterns. Specific handling techniques for stallions and foals will be demonstrated and performed. In addition, restraint methods, behavior modification methods. Be ready to learn firsthand in this session how behavior affects animal handling and welfare. Curriculum Alignment: Outcome 2.3. Greenhouse for Beginners-Amy Ryan, Greenhouse Manager, The Ohio State University ATI and Beth Berthold, Agricultural Educator, Lorain County JVS Instructors will discuss the basics of what makes a greenhouse, different types of greenhouses and glazings, identify basic supplies, irrigation principles, basic crops, creating a crop schedule, production, sanitation, basic pest management, and suppliers. Plant Nutrition Select and apply macronutrients and micronutrients based on deficiencies identified using testing application methods and optimum management that account for environmental factors. Introduction into Small Engine-Mike Spahr, Agricultural Educator, Greene County CC & Craig Wellert, Agricultural Educator, Wayne County CC Instructors will learn basic small air-cooled engine troubleshooting skills aligned with the Ag & Industrial Power Course. Instructors will be able to identify and provide maintenance procedures in checking and changing fluids, servicing and changing filters, and identify safe starting/stopping engine procedures. Instructors will be able to compare and contrast two and four cycle engines. Curriculum Alignment: Outcome 4.1. This interactive presentation asks many thought-provoking questions, including-is our curriculum and how we teach still in the outhouse era or are our CTE programs reflective of the modern era? Using Ohio Means Jobs-Carolyn George, Ohio Department of Education, Office of Career-Technical Education This session will explain building a student’s career pathway and career success tools within Ohio Means Jobs. This web-based career tool is partnered with Monster to offer your students a director portal to Ohio’s jobs. Curriculum Alignment: Outcome 1.1. Functions and Deficiency Symptoms of Selected Essential Nutrients in Floriculture Crops-Dr. Robert McMahon, Coordinator of our Greenhouse and Nursery Management Program, The Ohio State University-Agricultural Technical Institute This session will address the following topics: 1) Definitions of macroelements and microelements, 2) The major functions of selected macroelements and microelements, and 3) Major deficiency symptoms of selected macroelements and microelements. Teachers will learn how to depict deficiency symptoms between species. Furthermore, educators will calibrate fertilizer injectors and learn how to calculate fertilizer quantities needed for a given PMM of nitrogen, etc. Curriculum Alignment: Outcome 8.1.
