Barriers to Communication ♣Physical/Channel Barriers ♣Language Barriers ♣Cultural/Gender Barriers ♣Individual/ Attitudinal Barrier ♣Emotional Barrier ♣Lack of Subject Knowledge ♣Stress Physical/Channel Barriers -are often due to the nature of the environment. -length of the communication is long. -lack of interest to communicate. Example Example When a classroom have background noise, poor lighting or an environment that is too hot/cold, the student will encounter distractions. Click here Language Barriers -inability to converse in a language that is known by both the sender and receiver is the greatest barrier to effective communication. Example Example When a person uses inappropriate words while conversing or writing, it could lead to effective misunderstanding. Click here Cultural/Gender Barriers -are distinct differences between the speech patterns in a man and those in a woman including age, education, cultural background, priorities can separate one person from another and create a barrier. Example Example An Islam guy was allowed to have more than one wife at a time, but for others, it’s already a sin. Click here Emotional Barrier -a barrier to communication if you are engrossed in your emotions for some reasons. Example Example Person tend to have trouble listening to others or understanding the message conveyed to you. Click here Individual/Attitudinal Barrier -refers to viewing what is said from one’s mindset. Limitation in physical and mental ability, and distrusted source divides the attention and create a mechanical barrier which affects the attitude and opinion. Example Example Two persons have experienced the same event, their mental perception may/may not be identical which acts as a barrier. Click here Lack of Subject Knowledge -A person who sends a message lacks subject knowledge then he may not be able to convey his message clearly. The receiver could misunderstand his message, and this could lead to a barrier to effective communication. Example Example If a person was used to say words in a loud voice, then the listener whose not used to it might think that the speaker was angry. Click here Stress -When a person is under immense stress, he may find it difficult to understand the message, leading to communication distortion. Example Example If a person has a problem and have many things to think about. That person won’t recognize the happenings in its surroundings. Click here
