PUTTING IT INTO PERSPECTIVE
This is high school athletics, it's part
of the education they're receiving in high
school. This is not a (collegiate) Division I
program. It's supposed to be fun, and it's
supposed to teach life lessons. This
perspective is being lost.
My job as a coach should be to build
character with the kids, I should teach kids
and make them feel like family and make
sure they graduate.

LET THEM PLAY

My son’s high school football team finished 1-9 this year, and I wouldn’t be prouder of
this team if they had gone undefeated.

They made a game of it each Friday night, and while they often were
outnumbered and overmatched, they never were outplayed. My son and his
teammates have learned more about hard work, sportsmanship and resilience on
the football field than anywhere else, and these lessons will make them better
men.

But as much as I enjoy the tradition of high school football, I worry about its future.

My son’s school has nearly 2,000 students, but his team is lucky to suit up 20
players for a varsity game. There are a lot more young men who want to play, but
whose parents won’t let them. Their parents think the risk of brain injury
outweighs the benefits of playing.

I understand the concerns and share them, but I have concluded those concerns
are misplaced. My children are the most important part of my life. I am a widower,
and when my son wanted to play football his freshman year, every mom and my
in-laws chastised me for considering it. Even President Obama wondered
whether he’d let his theoretical son play.

LET THEM PLAY

I’m a physician and medical researcher at Stanford, and I only
decided to let my son play after reviewing the medical research.

The study that best elucidates the risk of football-related brain injury comes from the federal Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention. CDCP officials studied 3,439 former National Football League
players with at least five years of pension-credited playing seasons between 1959 and 1988.

This is arguably the highest-risk group of players available for study. Among these players, the
incidence of neurodegenerative disease is three times higher than in the general population. However,
the risk of death from neurodegenerative disease was relatively low in both groups: 3 percent in NFL
players, and 1 percent in the general population. The risk associated with a long NFL career is not
insignificant but remains small.

The high-profile research that is regularly cited as connecting the dots between football-related
concussions and dementia in NFL players lacks sufficient data to establish a causal link. Most of the
cases considered focus on former NFL players involved in a lot of high-risk behavior other than
football, and none of these studies included a control group. Research like this is typically filed away
as “interesting, but we need better data.”

The key here is that high school football is not the NFL. The
Mayo Clinic found that the risk of high school football players
developing degenerative neurological diseases later in life is
no greater than if they had been in the band, glee club or choir.

LET THEM PLAY
The data suggests that the normal life of adolescents puts them at risk for brain injury
all the time. What would be the alternatives to my son playing football? Sports such
as soccer, skiing, rock climbing or lacrosse have similar risk profiles to high school
football.
My late wife rode horses competitively growing up. As an anesthesiologist at a
hospital that treats more horse-related trauma accidents than any other in the
country, I’m glad my son went with football.
I believe the benefits of playing high school football are worth the risks. Football is an
equal-opportunity sport. All different types of athletes make up a football team, the
skills needed don’t require years of practice, and there is no real advantage for kids
with private coaches. A healthy, average athlete who shows up to all the team’s
practice sessions and attends off-season weight training can usually find a spot on
the team.
My son’s teammates are from the whole socioeconomic and racial spectrum. The only
reason that his team was able to make a contest out of each game, despite that they
had so few players to work with, is that the boys learned how to build on what they
had in common instead of focusing on their differences.


As Jack Kemp, the former pro quarterback and congressman, once said, “The huddle
is color-blind.” In an increasingly diverse world, opportunities to learn how to work
together with a wide range of people who start out on equal footing should not be lightly
dismissed.

When I sit in the stands, I worry when my 160-pound son lines up on the front
line of the kick return team, but that is only slightly less than I worry when I sit in
the passenger seat as he merges onto the highway. Adolescence is a scary time
for parents.

To all you parents who are keeping your sons from playing football, I say,
“Let them play.” They are just as safe on the football field as they are in
most of the other sports and activities we regard as a necessary part of a
healthy adolescence. You can save money on expensive club sports and
specialty coaches, and your sons will develop skills that will serve them
and the rest of us well.

Ed Riley, 56, is the younger brother of Oregon State football coach Mike Riley and is a former
quarterback at Whitworth. He has two sons and a daughter. The youngest boy, Noah, is a senior
quarterback at Gunn High in Palo Alto, Calif. Ed Riley works as a professor of anesthesia at Stanford
University.

STRENGTH PROGRAM











Strength and Power Workout
It is a 3 Day per week workout that focuses on building strength through Max Effort Lifts
twice a week and Power through Max Speed lifts once a week. Players are guided
through the workouts by using charts and charting their progress.
Exercises are performed on a 3 week cycle which means that exercises change every
three weeks. By changing the Max Effort lifts every three weeks, it allows the central
nervous system to continue to perform at maximum effort without being detrimental to
the lifter.
On the Maximum Speed Lift day, lifters move 50-65% of their maximum strength as fast
as they can. By training with these percentages, the lifter is able to increase their
power.
Workouts are also broken into two major groups so that more players can lift at the
same time but not be using the same equipment.
Equipment Needed:
Max percentage chart - this chart only goes down to 75% of max but is good for
figuring out new max weight
Percentage chart – look under weight room charts. These charts have 50% through
95% and go down to 45lbs which is good for high school. Need these charts for max
speed lifts.
Plate Loading Chart – helps players put on the correct weight quicker.


Football teaches many life lessons




It is crucial to the team and individual success that players understand
the importance of being at practice on time EVERYDAY.








Excused absences from practice must be pre-approved by (at least a day ahead of
time) Head Coach
Academic Assistance- must have prior approval
Approval is granted by getting a signed note from the teacher, upon return the
player must have a signed and timed note.
All players will be at practice RAIN OR SHINE
At school- At practice
If a player gets sick at school/problem arises the player is responsible
for seeking out the Head Coach before they leave. If not it will be
unexcused.
If you miss practice or are late (FOR ANY REASON) you will stay after
practice and to make up for missed conditioning. THIS IS NOT
PUNISHMENT! You must stay in shape if you are to play, help the
team.

Academic progress will be evaluated on
a consistent basis to ensure academic
success.

Class attendance and current grades
will help up determine the progress of
our student-athletes.

STUDY SKILLS

Hold seminars focusing on
academic training skills and habits
necessary to assist the studentathlete in their pursuit of academic

assist the student-athlete in helping

Playing Time

Playing time is determined by 3 factors
 Ability
 Hard Work
 Attendance
A player that is always lazy and misses practice will
not play. A player who always works hard but cannot
get the job done will not play. Not all players
automatically play in a game. Players have to be able
to get the job done. At the varsity level we play to win
the game. No player will receive playing time based on
anything other than ability and hard work. No player
will receive preferential treatment. Our goal is to try to
get as many players on the field as possible.

Travel
All athletes must travel to and from
events with the team.
 Exceptions will only be made if the
athlete has received prior approval

 Players with approval must be SEEN leaving
with their parent by the Head Coach.
No player is permitted to leave with
another players parents
 This is a district policy that involves
liability.


Conduct
All team members are expected to act
as perfect role models and citizens.
 Inappropriate language, swearing,
obscene gestures, and fighting will not
be permitted at any time.
 Athletes who break team rules of
conduct will be subject to suspension
and/or dismissal from the team at the
head coach along with athletic directors’
discretion.


Locker Room/Field House




Only PHANTOM football players are permitted
in the locker room.
All team members are responsible for keeping
their lockers and the locker room clean.
All equipment issued should be stored and
hung up properly in the players locker.
NO fighting, horseplay, inappropriate behavior,
etc. will be permitted in the locker room.

GENERAL CONDUCT POLICY
DON’T BE THAT GUY
Do not do anything to hurt the team. Do not engage in any activity
that could reflect negatively on you, your family, or Phoenixville in a
derogatory manner. Any conduct that brings negative publicity which
embarrasses the organization, is conduct detrimental to the team.
You must represent Phoenixville High School in a class manner.
Personal behavior is a matter of self discipline and self pride. If you
cannot think highly of yourself then how can you expect anybody
else to. We cannot win with players who do not have these qualities
because they cannot take pride in the team. We will have great
character and represent our school with integrity. We will be the
class of Pennsylvania high school football.

TEAM RULES

BE ON TIME FOR ALL CLASSES, PRACTICES, AND GAMES. DO
NOT VOICE ANY COMPLAINTS TO ANY OTHER SCHOOL
PERSONNEL. ANY COMPLAINTS MUST BE DIRECTED TO THE
HEAD FOOTBALL COACH.

YOU WILL REPRESENT THE TEAM IN A CLASS FASHION.
INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES WILL BE RESPECTED, BUT NOT
WHEN REPRESENTING THE TEAM. PROPER DRESS WILL BE
REQUIRED FOR ALL PRACTICES AND GAMES TO BE
DETERMINED BY THE COACHING STAFF.

WE ARE GOING TO BE WHAT IS CALLED “ TOUGH NICE GUYS.”
EXHIBITING GOOD MANNERS IN ALL SETTINGS. BE
COURTEOUS, USING “PLEASE AND THANK YOU.” POLITE AND
APPROPRIATE MANNERS WILL BE USED WITH ALL STAFF
MEMBERS. NO EXCEPTIONS

OTHER SCHOOL POLICIES TO BE FOLLOWED INCLUDING
ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND DRUG USE.


WEAR THE EQUIPMENT ANNOUNCED AS UNIFORM OF
THE DAY. DRESS AS A TEAM – EVERYONE’S UNIFORM
MUST BE THE SAME. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL
RESULT IN QUALITY TIME WITH COACH AFTER
PRACTICE.


RECRUITING GUIDELINES
THE COACHES/PLAYERS WILL DO THE FOLLOWING:

ALL FOOTBALL STUDENT – ATHLETE PROSPECTS WILL HAVE A HIGHLIGHT
FILM MADE OF THEIR JUNIOR AND SENIOR SEASONS.

ALL HIGHLIGHT FILMS WILL BE SENT TO NUMEROUS COLLEGES ACROSS
THE COUNTRY, ALONG WITH ACADEMIC SCORES, TEST SCORES, AND
CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE PLAYER.

THE HEAD COACH WILL FILL OUT ALL COLLEGE QUESTIONNAIRES WITH
THE PLAYER AND RETURN THEM TO THE COLLEGE.

THE COACHES WILL PROMOTE ALL PLAYERS VIA TALKING WITH COLLEGE
COACHES THAT VISIT, CALLING COLLEGE COACHES, AND SHOWING FILM
OF PLAYERS TO COLLEGE COACHES.

THE COACHES WILL PROMOTE EACH STUDENT-ATHLETE WITH A
POSITIVE YET HONEST ASSESSMENT OF THEIR PLAYER’S ABILITY ,
COMMITMENT , WORK ETHIC , AND CHARACTER TO ALL COLLEGE
COACHES.
The coach does not get you a scholarship. All of the above information and documentation gets you a scholarship. The job of
the coaches is to promote and advertise all prospective student-athletes . The college coaches will determine the rest.

YOUNG PHANTOMS CAMPS AND CLINICS
FUTURE PHANTOMS CAMP – SUMMER - 4 DAY CAMP OPEN TO ELEMENTARY
AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. WILL BE DIRECTED BY OUR STAFF IN
WHICH OUR PLAYERS WILL HELP COACH. FUNDS GENERATED WILL GO
TOWARDS PRE-SEASON TRAINING CAMP MEALS AND TRAVEL. JULY 20th-23rd
WILL BE THE CAMP DATES FROM 9AM-2:00PM.
 Youth teams will be a part of GAME DAY on Friday Nights

FEEDER SYSTEM
 INTEGRAL PART OF OUR PROGRAM.
 WHERE OUR FUTURE STUDENT-ATHLETES COME FROM PMYC OR THE
PHUTURE PHANTOMS
 WE WILL BE INVOLVED IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE YOUTH PROGRAMS AS THEY
WILL WITH OUR PROGRAM
 WE WILL SPEND A LOT OF TIME HELPING OUR YOUTH COACHES. WE ALL WILL

FUTURE PHANTOMS CAMP
JULY 20th-23rd
HIGH SCHOOL FACILITIES
 The FUTURE PHANTOMS Camp is a non-contact youth
football camps for boy’s ages 6-14 looking to master both the
fundamentals and specialties of high level football
techniques. The camps are designed to teach the players the
basics of football, which will enhance their overall football ability,
along with specialty skills that will push the players to the next
level.



Main focus is to have FUN!

The Camps instructors take great pride in making certain each
camper leaves a better football player.
