JOB DESCRIPTION
SCRUB NURSE Functions:







Prepares the sterile field and instruments to be used for the operation and maintain the
sterility of the operative field. Responsible for maintaining and ensuring the integrity and
safety of the patient.
Performs proper surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving.
Assist surgeons in gowning, gloving, draping the patient and giving proper instruments
during operation.
Prepares and arranges the sterile drapes, instruments and other sterile supplies according
to the surgical procedure and surgeon’s preferences.
Ensures correct counts of instruments, sponges, needles and sharps before and after the
operation.
Participate in the “TIME OUT” procedure. Assist in skin prepping and draping for the
surgical procedure.
Is aware of the sequence of the procedure and anticipate needs of the surgeon and the
situation and keeps ahead in passing required instruments, sutures and sponges
throughout the procedure.
CIRCULATING NURSE Functions:







Prepares supplies and equipment needed prior to the operation.
Receives proper endorsement of the case and performs proper identification of the patient
and checks consents prior to operation.
Checks pre-operative instructions given prior to operation if performed in the ward with
the use of pre-operative check list.
Identifies the patient correctly, correct site and correct procedure.
Helps in proper positioning of the patient as per surgeons preference according to site of
operation.
Ensures that the needed electrical equipment is available in proper working condition
before the start of surgery. Anticipates the needs of the scrub nurse and the surgeons.
Responsible of initiating time out before the starting the procedure. Monitors the OR
traffic flow, ensures that the personnel in OR are limited. Responsible for
documentations.
RECOVERY ROOM/PACU NURSE Functions:








Receives patient from operating rooms, confirms the patient’s identification with the
operating room nurses and receives total endorsement of the operation performed for the
patient.
Assesses the patient immediately for the level of consciousness, airway and
hemodynamic status of the patients and monitors continuously. Administers oxygen and
places monitors to patient.
Monitors vital signs and oxygen saturation immediately and administers oxygen as per
order and comforts patients when they wake up from anesthesia.
Carry out doctor’s order. Administers medication as per doctor’s order.
Determines patient’s readiness for transfer from recovery room back to the ward with the
coordination from anesthesiologist as per standard.
Responsible for recovery documentations.
Ensures that the patient is hemodynamically stable when leaving the OR to the units.
Endorses to staff ward for patient’s transfer after fully recovered from anesthesia.
