AES Engineers Scholarship
Selection Criteria: A scholarship will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by
evaluated essays that are submitted. Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear

Amount: $500 will be awarded to the winner(s) each year.

APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Selection Criteria: Students interested in merit-based university scholarships must apply and complete
the scholarship application by December 1. The scholarship application is online.
Amount: Varies
Deadline: Apply to Admissions by November 15, 2014. to be eligible for scholarships. Scholarship
applications due December 1, 2014

AUBREY LEE BROOKS SCHOLARSHIP
UNC-CHAPEL HILL, UNC-GREENSBORO, NC STATE
Selection Criteria: Local Scholarship: Selection is on the basis of academic merit, leadership,
character, and the will of the recipient to help himself or herself prepare for a career as a useful and
informed citizen. Can be used at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro or NC State. You must gain
admission to college attending before the final scholarship selection in April.
Amount: One half cost of education, maximum for 2013-14 year was $11,700, Applicants must
demonstrate financial need. Financial need is determined by the Brooks Foundation based on the
information submitted on the FAFSA form. May also receive funding for summer internships, research
or study abroad and a one-time computer allowance up to $2,500
Deadline: The online deadline for the Brooks Application is January 31st.

RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Selection Criteria: For highly motivated African-American students for use at any 4-year college.
Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community
service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a
permanent resident visa card.
Amount: $10,000, renewable for four years
Deadline: Two deadlines: November 1 - Application will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar
Program and also forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers. January
9th – considered for only the Ron Brown Scholar Program.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY - TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP
Selection Criteria: Outstanding academics and potential to inspire fellow students to excel. Qualified
students need to bring in form from website to request nomination from their guidance counselor. *
Student must give counselors 2 weeks to prepare recommendations or nominations.
Amount: Full tuition

CLEMSON UNIVERSITY –LYCEEUM SCHOLARS
Selection Criteria: Successful candidates will be of a high intellectual caliber, as demonstrated
through academic achievement and test scores in their high school careers. They must be passionate
about ideas, intellectual engagement, and the subject matter of the Lyceum Scholars Program.
Lyceum Scholars study the moral, political, and economics foundations of a free society.
Amount: up to 10,000 distributed over 4 years

DAR
Daughters of the American Revolution
Selection Criteria: The National Society of DAR has approximately 23 scholarships, only 2 of the
scholarships require the applicant to have a DAR affiliation. All applicants must be citizens of the United
States and must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States. DAR
chapter sponsorship is not required (except for 2 scholarships); however, a chapter or state chairman
may work with the applicant to put the information together to send to the DAR Scholarship
Committee.

MVS
The Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship
Selection Criteria: Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree,
on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), in a U.S. college or university. All scholarships
are in the form of certificates of award conditional upon the full-time enrollment of the winner in an
accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks.
Amount: Ranging from $1,000 per year to $12,500 per year
Deadline: December 5, 2014

HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP
Selection Criteria: Demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of
character, financial need (preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family), a good
academic record (minimum GPA 2.0), commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to
contribute to society.
Amount: $5,000 to $20,000

COCA-COLA SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Selection Criteria: Demonstrated leadership, commitment to community, academic achievement,
employment. Minimum GPA of 3.0. Students must apply online.
Amount: 250 awards ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 over a 4-year period.
Deadline: Apply online by October 31, 2014

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
Please check with the college/university you are interested in attending to get information about any
scholarships they offer, procedures for application, and deadlines you need to meet. You also want to
find out admission application deadlines, FASFA information, and whether there are any other
requirements (for example the CSS/Financial Aid Profile).
CSS/FINANCIAL AID PROFILE
Certain Colleges require the PROFILE to be filed along with the FAFSA. Some of the North Carolina
schools that required it for 2012-2013 included Davidson College, Duke University, Elon University,
Lenoir-Rhyne University, NC A&T University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest University. There are
also specific scholarships that require the PROFILE. Registrations for the PROFILE are accepted beginning
October 1. Application can be found at www.collegeboard.com. The PROFILE must be submitted online.
DAVIDSON COLLEGE – JOHN MONTGOMERY BELK SCHOLARSHIP
Selection Criteria: Students with outstanding intellectual ability and success, demonstrated
leadership, experience, commitment to service, and overall personal vigor. West can nominate one
student.
Amount: Full scholarship/renewable for four years and two summer stipends
Deadline: Complete “I want to be considered” form in Guidance by October 3, 2014

EMORY UNIVERSITY
Selection Criteria: Emory University Scholars Program selection is based on academic achievement,
personal qualities, and contribution to class, school, and community. Students applying for Early
Decision I may apply for the Scholars program, but need to meet the November 1 deadline for all
materials. Students applying Early Decision II or Regular Decision must submit all required materials by
November 15.

FAFSA ON THE WEB
Selection Criteria: You and your family may complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) on the web after January 1, 2015. The address is: www.fafsa.ed.gov. You may print out a
pre-application worksheet for Web filers from the website. (If you do not want to file online, a paper
copy of the FAFSA application can be downloaded or obtained by calling 1-800-433-3243.) The earliest
you can submit this form is January 1, 2015. The sooner you file it after the 1st the better. Awards are
made until funds are depleted. You and your parent can prepare by each applying for a US Department
of Education PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. Your PIN enables you to sign your FAFSA electronically. (Warning!
This is a free application. If you accidentally go to fafsa.com they will try to charge you to help you do
this application.)
NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY - CENTENNIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Selection Criteria: Awarded to students entering the College of Textiles and planning on entering a
Textile degree program. (See www.tx.ncsu.edu ) Fields of interest may be in engineering, business
management, chemistry, polymer chemistry, forensics, medical fields, international studies, design,
apparel, sourcing, fashion, merchandising, or retail management. West may nominate up to two
students. If you do not receive a nomination from West, self nominees should email

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
GENERAL HUGH SHELTON NATIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
Selection Criteria: Outstanding leadership experience and potential, evidence of personal character
and integrity, orientation towards community and service, and commitment to personal growth.
Amount: $10,000/year renewable plus funds for leadership enrichment activities

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY MERIT AWARDS

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD
Selection Criteria: For outstanding community service, particularly a self-initiated project or endeavor.
Interested students should complete an application online, print it out, and turn it into Guidance by
November 4. West may submit one application.

ROBERTSON SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Selection Criteria: Each year, the Robertson Scholars Program selects thirty new scholars--half
matriculate at Duke University and half at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. All exhibit
academic excellence, leadership potential, a commitment to community service and behavior that is
grounded in strong ethical principles. While all students who apply for admission to Duke and/or UNCChapel Hill are automatically considered for the Robertson Scholars Program, completing our program
application is the only way to ensure that the student's materials will be reviewed by our admissions
committee.
Amount: Full Tuition at Duke/Full Tuition, room, board and stipend at UNC-CH; resources of both
schools, summer opportunities, semester in sister campus, laptop, other extras

ROTC SCHOLARSHIPS
Selection Criteria: Seniors interested in applying for ROTC scholarships should begin the process. Go
to the website of the military branch in which you are interested.

UNC-CHAPEL HILL - THOMAS WOLFE SCHOLARSHIP
Selection Criteria: Very competitive scholarship based largely on written work submitted by student.
Students interested in UNC-Chapel Hill’s Creative Writing Program can submit manuscripts and
application. Must meet academic requirements for admission to Chapel Hill. Please see website for

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
MCNAIR SCHOLARS AND ALUMNI SCHOLARS PROGRAMS
Selection Criteria: For Non-South Carolina residents. Superior scholastic ability and achievement,
leadership potential, character. Math and Reading SAT >=1350. Must submit admissions and scholarship
application by deadline.

UNITED STATES SERVICE ACADEMIES
Selection Criteria: U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx is accepting applications from students interested in
attending a U.S. service academy, (US Naval, Air Force, Military, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine
Academies).

WINSTON-SALEM FOUNDATION
The Foundation offers scholarships with more general eligibility criteria, as well as scholarships with
more specific criteria, such as those for students attending specific high schools or colleges or those
pursuing certain fields of study. Some scholarships entail a one-time award, while many are
renewable for three additional years. Additionally, many scholarships are strictly merit-based, while
others will also consider family income as a factor. For more information on scholarships visit the
