III. Quotes—Speaker and DIDST analysis (Ques. 36-50)
-This is what I want you to do: identify the speaker of the quote and give a ONE SENTENCE explanation
as to how this quote can be analyzed using DIDST. Your choices of speakers are going to be: Shelia, Torey,
Bryson, or Douglass. If you are comfortable analyzing diction only, then analyze each quote for diction. There is
not one right answer to this, but I do not want a summary of the quote!
Sample Quote—“Just a little piece of him is dead…The rest of him is waiting for us in Bayonne. And I will go with
Alex.”
Sample Answer- Jane says this. Clearly, the diction is important here, for when Jane uses the words “I will go”
the verb will signifies her defiance of Robert Samson, who has just forbidden anyone to go to the protest.
IV. Short Answer/Fill in the Blank on novels (Ques. 51-80); most will come from Topics of Discussion, such as:
-According
to Bryson, what is the extent of the environmental crisis and what are its causes?
-How is Bryson not immune from America’s social problems while on the AT?
-Explain how Bryson uses humor in his memoir.
-What might be his message to his readers (although never implicitly stated)?
-State one of the three themes of the novel listed on your Topics of Discussion on A Walk in the Woods.
-Explain how Stephen Katz is a juxtaposition to Bryson.
-Explain one mistake you believe Torey makes.
-Explain one theme in the novel One Child listed on the Topics of Discussion.
-What question does Torey ask herself after Shelia misbehaves for the sub?
-What does Shelia have to eat when out to dinner with Torey and Chad?
-What practical joke of Whitney’s backfires?
-What is the general content of Shelia’s first letter to Torey?
-Why does Shelia have to come to school early and leave late?
-What makes Shelia ask, “How come you do this?”
-What did Torey and the other experts finally surmise was the reason behind Shelia’s unusual speech pattern?
-Why does Torey let go of Shelia’s overall straps?
-According to Bryson, what is the extent of the environmental crisis and what are its causes?
-How is Bryson not immune from America’s social problems while on the AT?
-Explain how Bryson uses humor in his memoir.
-What might be his message to his readers (although never implicitly stated)?
-State one of the three themes of the novel listed on your Topics of Discussion.
-Explain how Stephen Katz is a juxtaposition to Bryson.
Word to the Wise: The most difficult aspect of this test is the amount of questions you must answer in a relatively
short amount of time. Honors students have a tendency to “over-answer” a question to completely prove to the
teacher that they know it. Therefore, if the question asks, “Explain briefly if Miss Jane is a hero,” an acceptable
answer would be “She is a hero because she chose to raise Ned when she herself was a child.” You do not need to
answer, “Webster’s Dictionary defines a hero as ‘A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose,
especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.’ Indeed, Miss Jane Pittman (formerly known as Ticey)
honorably distinguishes herself as a hero by this definition. For example, in the first chapter of the novel….” (and
so on). JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION! This is especially true for the most difficult aspect of the test, which is
the quotes. I only want a ONE SENTENCE analysis of the quote for you to get credit.
Remember--You will finish the test on time if you have studied and JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION!
