Student application - Metropolitan State University

advertisement
The Literacy Corps program discovers and develops
university resources to ensure that all children can
read well and independently. Metropolitan State
University participates in this literacy initiative by
offering tutoring opportunities through communitybased learning, course requirements, group
internships, and civic engagement initiatives.
Literacy Corps at Metropolitan State provides
literacy tutors for several St. Paul Public Schools,
Minneapolis Public Schools and libraries and
learning centers located in the Twin Cities. In each
of these inner city settings, children and young
people face significant language and literacy
challenges. We offer a number of options for
working with children and young people to develop
literacy skills. In all cases, university tutors are
matched with programs and students based on
need and availability. To serve our sites and
students best, university students are asked to
make a weekly commitment. Students eligible for
federal work study may receive payment for hours
spent attending training seminars and engaged in
on-site tutoring

Volunteer tutors are a critical part of a community movement to support the success of all
students and eliminate disparities in education. Many programs in the Tutoring Partnership rely
on the commitment of high-quality volunteer tutors to help young people build the academic and
social-emotional skills need to thrive in school and life. Our results show that 3rd graders
tutored through the Tutoring Partnership made significantly greater gains than those who were
not tutored. We are thrilled to announce that starting this fall, the Tutoring Partnership will begin
recruiting volunteers for opportunities in both Saint Paul and Minneapolis, thanks to a
partnership with Generation Next. Join the movement and become a tutor today!
