Roger Williams left Massachusetts in
1636 to start his own new colony.

tolerance since he was not able to
worship as he wanted to in
Massachusetts.
Anne Hutchinson also went to Rhode
Island
She believed that God spoke to
everyone, not just clergy.
She also held religious discussions.
She was found guilty of lying after
saying God had spoken to her.
She was banished from Massachusetts.

the new land from

The Carolinas, 1663
• The Carolinas were established for economic

North Carolina
• In 1729, North Carolina
became a royal colony.
• North Carolina became
very important for the
navy because of its
supplies like tar, pitch
and turpentine. All of
which are made from
pine trees.
South Carolina
• South Carolina was mostly
made up of large plantations.
• The plantation owners
purchased large amounts of
enslaved Africans to work on
the plantations as field

for exporting cash crops like
rice and indigo and for
importing slaves.
