Embedding Equality and Diversity in
Teaching
Context
Equality and diversity needs to be
embedded into all aspects of the
curriculum:
• Session planning
• Teaching methods
• Learning activities
• Assessment
• Inclusive resources and materials
Ofsted Report 2012
Staff have a good awareness of equality
and diversity issues. Learners’
understanding of equality and diversity is
satisfactory. The service recognises the
need to further improve the extent to
which equality and diversity are embedded
within the curriculum in some subject
areas.
Help all tutors to be more
confident about promoting equality
and diversity within lessons so that
learners understand these aspects
in modern society and appreciate
them as a natural part of their
learning.
ESOL Lesson
A discussion arose this session following SW’s
reading of her text containing descriptions of
customers waiting to be served in a butcher’s
shop. Concerned that Muslim learners in the
class would be offended, I asked them if
they were. They said they were not. SW had
no idea that pork is forbidden in Islamic
culture and so began a fascinating in depth
discussion with many, many questions from S,
T and B about Eid, Ramadan, Five Pillars of
Wisdom and Halal meat.

Internet Exercise
Open Internet Explorer and open Google.
(See Internet Searching hand out).
Type charity organisations in Bournemouth into the empty white
box and press the Search button or the Enter key on your
keyboard. You will see displayed various web sites dealing with all
aspects of charity organisations.
Check the number of results your Search has produced. Did you
find 985,000?
Now narrow the search to specific charity organisations. What do
you think you could type in to narrow the search?
Why not try typing in physical disability charity organisations in
Bournemouth, or try visual impairment charity organisations in
Bournemouth - does this make any difference to the number of
results?
