It leads to a qualification that is widely recognised by the world’s leading universities.” IB Learner Profile The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes. The IB Diploma Programme To fulfill the requirements of the IBDP students must complete the Extended Essay, Theory Of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service, that are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Program. 9 The CORE Extended Essay Theory Of Knowledge CAS The Extended Essay is a substantial piece of writing of up to 4,000 words, enabling students to investigate a topic of special interest that they have chosen themselves. The Theory of Knowledge course encourages students to think about the nature of knowledge, to reflect on the process of learning in all the subjects they study as part of their Diploma Programme and to make connections across them. Creativity, activity, service (CAS) involves students in experiential learning through a range of artistic, sporting, physical and service activities. It also encourages them to develop the skills of independent research that will be expected at university. For example, a student could study 2 HL subjects, 3 SL subjects and undertake an extended essay. Students who study Diploma Programme courses without covering the requirements of the full Diploma will be awarded “Individual Subject Certificates.” 15 IB Courses Programme College & University Guidance Mr Crowley College & University Guidance Counsellor 16 Year 11 Guidance • Structured Guidance Interview focussing on: Current performance in IGCSE classes; Differing subject requirements for entering Diploma Programme Facilitating subject combinations to ensure greater choice in degree programme post IB Diploma for the most popular destinations : USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, HK, Korea 17 Year 11 Guidance Super selective and highly selective universities in the USA and UK require the most challenging subject combinations Specific subject combinations at IB level for specific degree programmes in highly popular specialisms 18 Year 11 Guidance • HL Mathematics and often HL Economics are required if you wish to study Economics in the most selective UK universities, e.g. LSE, UCL, Bath • HL Mathematics and HL Physics are required for most engineering programmes [everywhere] • HL Chemistry and HL Biology along with HL Mathematics [if possible] for medicine – SL Mathematics also possible depending on university 19 Year 11 Guidance • WHAT IF YOU REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO??? • Strongly advise you to select a HL subject in multiple disciplines: – Literature or Languages – Science or Maths – Additional Humanities 20 Year 11 Guidance SELECTIVITY… WHAT DOES IT MEAN? 21 Year 11 Guidance UNIVERSITY IS ALL ABOUT PERSONAL FIT!!! 22 Year 11 Guidance – Individual Support Guidance interviews started in September and will finish on October 9th to aid students and parents in making informed choices for their futures.
