II Samuel 20 – More Kingdom Lessons
Attacks of the Devil
 Occur especially when we determine to do what is right
 Man of Belial (v 1)
o And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: (Luke
22:31)
o 8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a
perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? 9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said,
Doth Job fear God for nought? 10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that
he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11 But put
forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. (Job 1:8-11)
o 3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a
perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although
thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. 4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for
skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. 5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his
flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. 6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his
life. (Job 2:3-6)
o Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may
devour: (1 Pet 5:8 )
o And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and
the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and
night. (Rev 12:10)
 Every man of Israel went up from David
o So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave
unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem. (2 Sam 20:2)
 Make sure we don’t miss the but……the men of Judah clave unto their king….
 Illustration: Elijah
o And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel
have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the
sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. (1 Kings 19:10)
o And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of
Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the
sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. (1 Kings 19:14)
o Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal,
and every mouth which hath not kissed him. (1 Kings 19:18)
Turmoil Between Brethren
 Turmoil – Not right, but reality
 Amasa
o Was not dependable/reliable/counted on
 4 ¶ Then said the king to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and be thou here
present. 5 So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah: but he tarried longer than the set time which he
had appointed him. (2 Sam 20:4-5)
 Joab
o Positive: Was a “get the job done kind of guy”
o Negative
 Did not listen / obey the king (refused to accept Amasa as captain of the host)
 Killed the brethren (Abner and Amasa)
 KEY LESSON: Cannot ignore the problem (removing the body of Amasa)
o Joab’s rebellion must be addressed
 Joab’s End
 29 And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold,
he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him. 30
And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come
forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus
said Joab, and thus he answered me. 31 And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall
upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me,
and from the house of my father. 32 And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who
fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father
David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa
the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah. 33 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head
of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his
house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD. 34 So Benaiah the son of
Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the
wilderness. (1 Kings 2:29-34)
God’s Intervention
 Proper use of women in war – WISDOM
o Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak
with thee. (2 Sam 20:16)
o Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and
cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to
Jerusalem unto the king. (2 Sam 20:22)
o Women helpful to avoid bloodshed
 Men are too quick to attack, shed blood and destroy
 LESSON: We should seek and heed the counsel of wise women
