Essay Prompt: All the rhetorical analysis essay prompts will ask you something about how the author uses rhetorical techniques. All RA essay prompts will ask you to tie the RD’s you discuss to the author’s message, purpose, attitude. Write a well-organized essay in which you explain how Sanders uses rhetorical strategies to convey his message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness. Notice the use of “HOW.” They are not asking which techniques, or what his purpose is, they are asking you to explain HOW he uses them to achieve a particular effect. Sort of like a recipe—you can’t just list ingredients, you have to explain how to put them all together to make the food. “Under the Influence” First, discuss: What the heck IS Sanders’s message about society’s attitude toward drunkeness? Write down your thoughts. – This is a preliminary best guess. – You MUST refine and revise your ideas about Sanders’s attitude as you go through the rest of this process. – If you don’t, you may end up with either a flat-out wrong interpretation, or a very shallow/vague interpretation. “Under the Influence” Now, direct your attention to paragraphs 9 through 12 on pages 141 & 142. You will be focusing ONLY on these four paragraphs. You can’t use anything outside these paragraphs. “Under the Influence” Now, choose 1 of the Big 5 to focus on. – You should choose something you think you can relate to Sanders’s message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness. – Feel free to use anything you came up with yesterday. Re-read or re-skim those 4 paragraphs of the essay, paying close attention to your 1 item. Write down your thoughts, journal-style – How does your 1 item help convey Sanders’s message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness? “Under the Influence” Next, find at least 2 other things (other Big 5 items, smaller RDs, ELP) that connect to your 1 item. – All 3 things (your first item, plus these new two items) must connect somehow. They can’t live in the same paper if they’re not related. – All must also somehow explain how Sanders conveys his message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness. Write down what these things are, where you found them, how they connect to your 1 item, and what they show about Sanders’s message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness. “Under the Influence” Have you refined, revised, deepened and specified your idea concerning Sanders’s message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness? Time to do it now. Write about your new thoughts. “Under the Influence” Now you’re ready to start your essay. Next few slides will take you through the process. Write these things down! “Under the Influence” First: Intro – About 3 sentences. – Mention author’s name, title of piece. Next: Thesis – Must address prompt. – Mention what you think author’s purpose IS You may NOT say “Sanders’s message about society’s attitude toward drunkenness.” You MUST tell us instead what you think his attitude IS. – Mention which Big 5 or ELPs you tied it to, and how. – Possible format: “Sanders uses __________(RDs) in order to convey_______(attitude)” “Under the Influence” Then: Outline – 2-3 para. – Focus on thesis. – What order of ideas will flow best? Make the most sense? – Write topic sentences Last: Evidence – Find short quotes or paraphrases from the text that will back up your thesis. – Find at least 2-3 for each paragraph. “Under the Influence” Go! Make it happen. You will be sharing with other groups when we are finished. If you get done early: – FIRST, go back and make sure you weren’t just being too superficial. If you are done really early, you probably don’t have enough depth in your ideas. – THEN, if you are sure you have enough depth, go ahead and begin writing your first paragraph.
