Literature Project Choices and Guidelines (30 points) Directions: You will choose one (1) of the following project choices below. You will be graded on your preparation, content, and presentation of your project…yes, presentation. Remember…have fun with this, but I am looking for your interpretation of the literature first and foremost! Here they are: 1. Character Sketch (characterization) 2. Choose any character from the novel. Sketch the character as you see him or her based on the author’s imagery and descriptions. MAKE IT COLORFUL and NEAT! Draw 5 symbols from the novel that relate to the character’s setting, conflicts, likes, hobbies, etc. Select 5 good quotes that show this character’s traits/attitude and scatter these around the poster (in quotation marks of course!) Pick a song that describes this character and attach the lyrics to the poster. You will write a page explaining the significance of this character and why you chose them. You will also explain the significance of the 5 symbols you chose in relation to the character and why you chose your song lyrics choice and how it relates to your character. Finally, you will present this poster to the class and essentially verbalize your write-up. HAVE FUN! Display the Setting (setting) You can draw, make a map, use the computer, build a 3D version in a shoe box, collage, or build a mini set. You can include details from any significant scene from the novel… If you’re thinking big, please let me know first! You will write a page explaining the significance of this setting to the story and why you chose it. Please understand that an overnight effort will not suffice. I am expecting some great results if you choose to do this! 3. RECREATE the Plot (plot) You can make a cartoon version, write an essay, write a poem, make a video, write a song, act it out, make a soap opera, or any other ways that you could summarize the plot of this story. Your recreation must include important details from the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution of the story. Your recreation must include and the most important conflicts in the novel and identify the conflict types (character vs. character, etc.). You will write a page explaining the significance of your recreation to the story and why you chose it. 4. Insert or Add a Chapter (Author’s style, plot, character) If you are unhappy with the outcome of the novel or you want to know more information, then you should create it on your own. When writing the chapter, you need to make sure that you continue to write in author’s format. Keep the same point of view and the same writing style. You should also be true to the original storyline by not introducing characters or plot events that do not fit (i.e. aliens or miracle cures). Your chapter should be 3 to 5 pages. Act out a Scene live or video taped (Drama skills, characterization, interpretation) With up to four other people (depending on the scene…if the scene calls for more, that is a possibility) choose a scene and act it out in class. You may tape your performance, but be sure it is audible and is easily understood by the viewers. Use props, memorize the dialogue that you will perform, be expressive! Minimum of five minutes- maximum of 10 minutes. A typed copy of the script must be turned in. Each cast member must submit a typed, one-page reflection of his/her experience. 6. Make a Soundtrack (theme, plot, mood, characterization) Choose at least 8 songs that would make for a good soundtrack if the novel was adapted to a motion picture. Please put the songs on a cd. Design and illustrate a CD cover that includes the author’s name, the novel’s title, and the titles and artists of each song. Next, on a separate sheet, type each song title and a description of the part of the novel the song would fit in and why. Each description should also include how the song relates to a literary element of the novel (plot, theme, setting, characterization, point of view). 7. Create a talk show live or video taped (characterization, plot, cause and effect) Create a talk show like Ellen or Dr. Phil. Portray the relationships and the problems that plague the characters in the novel. Be sure to use specifics. The more accurate you are, the more points you get! You can use humor, but be sure to align your script to actual events that happened in the novel. Remember, I am looking for your understanding of characters, plot, setting, theme, and point of view. You may even bring out the author! Each group member must submit a typed, one-page reflection of why you chose to focus on the particular events and/or characters. 8. Create a Music Video video taped (mood, characterization, plot, themes, images) Choose one song that fits the overall mood of the novel and create a video like you see on MTV or VHI (except much more tasteful). The scenes should illustrate characters images, plot, symbols, allusions… that make up the novel. You will write a page explaining the significance of the scenes you chose for your video. 9.
