Study: Analyze Data
School Data Analysis
A comprehensive needs assessment
includes an analysis of the correlation
between achievement/outcome data with
demographic data.
• School Data Profile
• Study the Achievement, Demographic, Process,
& Perception Data
• School Data Analysis
• Identify Strengths and Challenges
• Summarize Content Area Goals

Study the
School Data
Profile
• What are the conclusions regarding strengths and
challenges of student learning needs?
• What content area goals will be addressed in the
School Improvement Plan?
• What are the gaps between current student
achievement and where the school would like it to
be?
• What are the leading causes for the gaps in
performance?

students’ perceptions of the learning
environment? (Perception Data)
o

Root Cause Questions
Would the problem have occurred if the cause had not been
present?
Will the problem reoccur if the cause is corrected?
What data are indicating there is a problem or problems?
What other indicators are there that might be related, using
another piece of data?

Study: Set Goals
After analyzing the School Summary Report of
the Comprehensive Needs Assessment, the
School Improvement Team (SIT), working
collaboratively, will identify areas of success to
celebrate and decide which areas require
attention (challenges).
The challenges will be organized and grouped
into themes and refined into the school’s
achievement goals to help guide the school
toward its desired future.
17
One Common Voice - One Plan
Study: Set Goals
Based on your building level data, are there
district goals that need to be incorporated into
the building’s and/or district’s school
improvement plan/strategic plan?
Are the building goals and the district goals
aligned and supportive of each other?
Think
Systemically
18

Study: Set Goals
• Set your school improvement goals based on your
data.
 Schools are required to write a goal for any area
for which they do not meet AYP and/or are not
performing at the state average on state
assessments.
 Maintenance goals are appropriate for areas in
which the school is performing at a satisfactory
level and are focused on maintaining or improving
student performance in that content area.
• Set your measurable objective statement to
support your school improvement goal.

Goal Statements (Student focused)
Moving from
challenges to
goals!
• Linked to identified student academic
learning needs
• State broadly the area of focus and that all
students will become successful learners
• Based on a careful analysis of data
• Align with the challenges identified in the
Comprehensive Needs Assessment
• Define the priority area for an improvement
plan
Choose three to five goal statements.
(English Language Arts and/or Math goals are required by NCLB if a
school has been identified for improvement based on Adequate
Yearly Progress.)
21

Study: Set Goals
Measurable Objective Statement (Student
Focused)
• Linked to the goal
• Identifies the knowledge, skills, outcomes, and
results that are measurable, observable, and
quantifiable
• Also referred to as SMART goals
• States: Who will be able to do what, by when,
as measured by what?

Measurable
Attainable

Objectives
Student Goal Statement example:
All students will improve their reading skills across the
curriculum schoolwide.
Measurable Objective Statement examples:
All students will increase skills in the areas of retelling
and informational reading so that the percentage of
non-disabled students proficient on the MEAP increases
from 56% to 75% and the percentage of students
proficient on the MEAP increases from 35% - 52%.
*Be sure to consider all data sources as you determine
your goals and your measurable objectives.

What do our students need to know and
be able to do?
How will we know if our students are
meeting the standards?
What will we do differently if students are
not meeting the standards?
What will our teachers do differently to
achieve the goal?

Study: Research Best Practices
As a building you want to establish procedures to utilize
the best available research-based practices and
strategies to improve student learning. This enables
you to select the practices that will have the most
impact on student achievement as you move forward
with your school improvement plan.
* Remember, the School Improvement Framework is
based on current research and should be used to guide
your strategy statements and action steps.

Align your strategies to the School
Improvement Framework*!
*The School Improvement Framework is based on
research. Your Comprehensive Needs Assessment
will point you to areas that need attention and will
help you to determine strategies for each of your
goal areas and/or professional development needs!
