Alexandru Capatu Port of Constanta A World Class Maritime Port The Port of Constanta has a major importance in the Black Sea area, being located at the crossroads of the trade routes linking the markets of the landlocked countries from Central and Eastern Europe with the Transcaucasus, Central Asia and the Far East. Largest and deepest port in the Black Sea Port of Constanta A World Class Maritime Port Characteristics: •Total surface: 3,926 ha •156 berths (out of which 140 operational berths) •Quay length - almost 30 km •Length of breakwaters (north+south) – 14 km •Total handling capacity – over 120 million tons/year •Natural water depths between 8 and 19 m •Safe port •Port complying with the ISPS Code and the EU security regulation in force •Friendly environmentally management •Free port status starting with January 2007 Largest and deepest port in the Black Sea MPA ongoing projects Extension by 1,050 m of North Breakwater Objectives: -improve operations conditions in the port basins, by reducing waves stirring; -increase navigation safety; -protect arrangements and infrastructure of the port peers/births. MPA ongoing projects Road bridge over Danube-Black Sea Canal 0+540 Objectives: -better access: connection of the South area of the port with national roads network; -connection with Bucharest – Constanta highway through a by-pass financed by EBRD; -increase navigation safety. MPA ongoing projects Development of the railway capacity in the river-maritime area of Constanta Port Objectives: -improvement of railways operations in the river-maritime area by building a systematized railway complex; -more railways lines in order to fulfill the necessity of the operators forecasted until 2020. Future MPA projects Bridge over the connection canal in the river-maritime area Development of quays and reclaim land on the Artificial Island Development of river – maritime area Construction of Pier IIIS infrastructure Port Operator News Bulk Terminal COMVEX is the main ore and coal operator . •13 berths, water depths up to 19 m • Direct transshipment from sea-going vessels to barges • Storage capacity: 3.5 milion tons • Handling capacity: 22 milion tons /year Until 2011 - more than 30 million euro in facilities which allows an increase in operational capacity with 33-40%, representing 60,000 tons/day, leading to a volume of almost 40 million tons per year. Port Operator News Floating Oil Terminal at Midia Port Operator: RomPetrol 8.6 km offshore location Capacity : 24 mil. tons/year Terminal can accommodate ships up to 165.000 dwt Investment : 175 mil. Dollars Midia Marine Terminal has finalized building two new berths, one for maritime and the other one for inland vessel to transit oil products. Octogon Gas & Logistics is building a new GPL terminal. It will be the most modern terminal at the Black Sea with storage capacity of 4.000 cubic meter, having delivery possibilities to trucks, railways and inland vessels. Euros Port Operator News The new Passenger Terminal has an operation capacity of 100,000 passengers/year, being the most recent investment able to increase the activity on the Romanian seaside. The existing mooring length is 293 m, the quay depth is 13.5 m, ensuring the mooring of big vessels, with drafts up to 10-11 m. 14 Inland navigation relieves road and rail Biggest transport capacities: a push tow of 3.700 to equates 93 wagons or 148 trucks (platoon of 10 km!) © via donau Inland navigation – economic and eco-friendly Transportation distance for one ton of goods using the same amount of energy © via donau Inland navigation – lowest external costs Inland navigation causes the least accident, noise, pollution and climatic costs © via donau Expenses of the different transport modes in the Danube cooridors The Danube requires the least investments in the infrastructure in comparison to road and rail © via donau Constanta as River Port Port of Constanta has a important role in the development of inland transport, due to its connection to the Black Sea – Danube Canal The 64.4 km long and 90 m wide canal has a water depth of 7 m and 17,5 m clearance under the bridges The river traffic registered in Constanta Port in 2008 was more than 11 million tons, especially coal, ore, cereals and steel products. In 2009 the river traffic was 7,9 million tons. Why Constanta?
