Cell Cycle Activities
POSTER
Create a poster that:
 Shows the stages of the cell cycle including the stages of mitosis
 Identifies the parts of the cell during mitosis
 Has a description of what is happening at each stage of mitosis
 Has a title
 Is colored with pictures
CELL DIVISION STORY
Write a story that:
 Explains the stages of the cell cycle and mitosis
 Written from the point of view of a chromosome
 Includes the characters spindle fiber, centriole, nuclear membrane, cytoplasm and other
chromosomes
CREATE A QUIZ
Create a quiz that other students might use to test their understanding of the cell cycle and
mitosis. It needs to be at least 15 questions long and should include matching, multiple choice,
short answer, picture identification, and compare and contrast questions.
MITOSIS AND CANCER
Read the E-Bio Handout on cancer and mitosis and write at least one page on the following:
 Identify two genes that increase the risk of cancer.
 Identify the types of cancer cells and explain how they are different.
 Identify some features of cancer cells that make them different; which one is most
important in causing cancer to spread?
 How do most common chemotherapy drugs work?
 Why would these drugs be good for stopping cancer?
 Why would these drugs be bad for normal, healthy cells?
Read the article, “Chromosome ‘Lassoing’,” and write at least one page on the following:
 How has our understanding of mitosis changed because of this research?
 What are the implications for mitosis and cancer treatment?
 What other research can scientists do to understand mitosis further?
