1.) What are examples of mechanical weathering?
Frost action, abrasion in moving water, and actions of plants and animals.
2.) How does frost action cause mechanical weathering?
Frost action is the repeated freezing and thawing of water. When water seeps into
cracks in rock and then freezes it expands. The expanding ice forces apart the cracks.
3.) How do plants and animals cause mechanical weathering?
The growth of plant roots in the cracks in rock also breaks rocks apart. Burrowing
animals such as ants, earthworms, and moles turn over the soil. This exposes fresh rock
to weathering processes.
4.) How does moving water cause mechanical weathering? (Hint: This is abrasion.)
Moving water transports pieces of broken rock. As the water churns through rapids or
crashes against shores, pieces of rock collide and crumble into smaller pieces.
5.) What are two important chemical weathering processes?
Oxidation and actions of acids.
6.) Describe how oxidation causes chemical weathering?
Air contains oxygen. Rocks that are exposed to air can react with the oxygen in it. Many
rocks contain iron. When oxygen combines with iron in rock, rust can form weakening
the rock.
7.) Describe how carbonation causes chemical weathering?
When carbon dioxide combines with water, carbonic acid is formed. Carbonic acid reacts
with some minerals dissolving them. Example- carbonic acid and water dissolve
limestone forming caverns.
