Definition:
The word listen means to give
attention to someone or something
in order to hear them.( Oxford Advance Learners’
Dictionary).
ENGLISH FOR PALESTINE contains
a lot of listening materials including:
lessons, dialogue, exercises, songs,
etc…
• Listening is the ability to identify
and understand what others are
saying. This involves understanding a
speaker's accent or pronunciation, his
grammar and his vocabulary, and
grasping his meaning.
The importance of Listening:
listening is an important receptive skill.
That is, one of the important ways of
receiving information is
through
listening
The sub-skills that can be emphasized in
listening exercises include:
• Predicting what people are going to talk
about.
• Guessing at unknown words or phrases
without panic.
• Using one's own knowledge of the subject
to help one understand.
• Identifying relevant points; rejecting
irrelevant information.
The Stages of Listening Process
1- HEARING occurs when sound waves strike the ear.
2- ATTENTION involves filtering out some messages
and focusing on others.
3- UNDERSTANDING refers to making sense of a
message by assigning meaning to it
4- REMEMBERING is the process of recalling
information from memory.
5- Evaluating it is a stage in which active listeners
participate.
6- RESPONDING consists of providing feedback to
the speaker.
Three stages in teaching listening
• 1- Pre-listening Activities: before
listening.
• 2- During Listening Activities.
• 3- Post-listening Activities: after
listening.
1- Pre-listening questions
The importance of pre-listening materials:
1- Pre-listening activities change the role of
listeners from passive “recorders” to active
participants .
2- Pre-listening activities increase the input.
3- Adopt a positive attitude.
4- Shut out distractions.
We can notice Grade 9 unit 13 page 80
Grade 9 unit 13 page 80
Grade 12 unit 4 pages 36&39
Not all listening material are preceded by
pre-listening questions.
We can notice unit 1 grade 2 page 4.
Unit 1 grade 2 page 4.
In grade 6 unit 2 page 10
Pedagogical benefits of no prelistening:
A. To give learners the chance to
hear English spoken by native
and to speak English
themselves.
B. They practice being fluent and
accurate English speakers.
2-Interesting and motivating listening
materials:
There are listening material students
are interested in more than others.
Some lessons teach learners how to
use language they learn through
listening materials so they will be
interested.
For instance, in grade 4 unit 3 page
18:
In grade 4 unit 3 page 18
Students hear someone askes about
his T-Shirt.
In grade 7 unit 5 page 22.
It is about birds of Palestine. Of
course, learners would be enjoyed to
know much about their country and
environment.
Also they would be happy to know
how to speak about birds in their
country.
In grade 7 unit 5 page 22.
3-Listening materials too difficult
for learners.
In English for Palestine, there are
some difficult lessons that are not
easy to be learned.
For example, in grade 3 unit 4
page 22, the lesson is about
animals. Some of these animals
are unfamiliar to this stage
students. So it’s difficult to learn.
In grade 3 unit 4 page 22
In grade 5 unit 18 page 74, the lesson
is all about the future of humans. It
talks about the space.
* Students of this age don’t know
what plants or space ships mean.

4-The length of listening materials:
In the first stage, the listening
material could be taught will in 45
minutes. In the second and third stage
there are some lesson long to be
taught well in 45 minutes. Teachers
should divide these lessons into
smaller parts. Consider the following
two examples:
Grade 6 – Unit 20 – page 82
Stage (5- 10)
Grade 12 - Unit 9 – page 59
5-Listen and Read:
Listen and Read is an activity that
enable students to do both activities. It
is a technique where students can
listen to people talking about different
topics and where at the same time they
can read what they are listening to. The
conversations are not fast which allows
students to understand better what the
people are talking about.
Grade 7- Unit 9 – page 38
In the third stage (11-12)
In this stage, there is no listen and read activities .All of the
activities have taken this form as illustrated in the picture
.
