This course is an integrated approach that uses sociological thinking to help students analyze and understand theoretical perspectives and research methods. Describe the Sociological perspective 2. Define and describe the history and origin of Sociology as a science 3. Define and describe social research methods. 4. Describe the relationship between theory and methods 5. Identify what society is; what culture is. 6. Discuss the major agents of socialization. 7. Describe the socialization process 8. Identify deviance and conformity. 9. Describe social issues as they relate to and the elderly 10. Develop an understanding of macro-change and micro-change in sociology Teaching Methods: Lectures, discussions, and class participation will be the primary teaching method supplemented by films, demonstrations, group activities, and guest speakers as available. In class and outside of class activities may be included. Professor will seek to incorporate methods that assist learners of all learning styles to ensure the greatest success in learning for all students. EVALUATION TECHNIQUES: 3 EXAMS OVER CHAPTERS, ONE FINAL EXAM, ONE GROUP PRESENTATION, ATTENDENCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION. ATTENDANCE: You get 10 points for every class you attend. If you miss a class, you miss the 10 points. While in class, you can acquire as much as ten (10) points per class for discussion reflecting that you have read and understood the material. This will be assessed by your open discussion during class times. LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP WORK: NONE THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP WORK OR LATE ASSIGNMENTS FOR THIS CLASS 10. Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may: Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test; Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question; Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class; Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.
