The SSS program is based on the cognitive, social and selfmanagement skills students need to be successful in school. The
program has award-winning research that validates its positive
impact on student achievement and a behavior.

School counselors using the SSS program have consistently
produced significant gains on standardized testing in math and
reading as well as increases in pro-social behavior. Recent
studies have also shown increases in student self-efficacy,
wellness and classroom climate.

Motivational Assessment of Personal
Potential (MAPP)
 This 15-minute assessment comprises of 71 different
triads, or 3 statements. The student will select one that
they most prefer, one they least prefer and leave one
blank. The results are scored against 900 jobs and allow
students to see what jobs are the best fits for them. The
results also show the education needed for the jobs,
career outlook and real job openings in their area.
 After the students take the assessment, they could split
into groups to discuss their results and brainstorm a
“plan of action” for their top career choice.

Student reviews summed up by stating “Ultimately, the
system can provide a life-changing experience if utilized
properly. The best advice to any user of this system would
be to follow it through, read a new chapter every day, and
use components from previous chapters to gain
perspective on future chapters. Overall, this system is
promising, and after only a few chapters I have seen some
tremendous improvements. I can hardly wait to finish
reading it!”

LEADS: For Youth (Linking Education and
Awareness of Depression and Suicide)

a curriculum for high school students in grades 9-12 that is designed to increase knowledge of
depression and suicide, modify perceptions of depression and suicide, increase knowledge of
suicide prevention resources, and improve intentions to engage in help-seeking behaviors. The
curriculum addresses such topics as depression and its symptoms, the link between depression
and suicide, the risk and protective factors associated with suicide, the warning signs of suicide,
seeking help and overcoming barriers to seeking help, and school and community suicide
prevention resources. By educating students about seeking help and the resources available to
them, the intervention aims to empower students to get help for themselves or others.

Teachers implement the curriculum for 1 hour a day over a 3-day period. Each session includes
classroom lecture, individual and group activities, and small-group discussions, followed by
activities and homework outside of school. The intervention incorporates technology-based
activities that resonate with youth, such as a simulated blog, an email and instant messaging
activity, and innovative awareness-raising projects. Implementation of LEADS is intended to
occur as part of a school suicide crisis management plan. The intervention can be implemented
by teachers with different teaching styles.

SOS Signs of Suicide

SOS Signs of Suicide is a secondary school-based suicide prevention program that
includes screening and education. Students are screened for depression and
suicide risk and referred for professional help as indicated. Students also view a
video that teaches them to recognize signs of depression and suicide in themselves
and others. They are taught that the appropriate response to these signs is to use
the ACT technique: acknowledge that there is a problem, let the person know you
care, and tell a trusted adult. Students also participate in guided classroom
discussions about suicide and depression. The program attempts to prevent suicide
attempts, increase

knowledge about suicide and depression, develop desirable attitudes toward
suicide and depression, and increase help-seeking behavior among youth.

Lifelines Curriculum

Lifelines is a comprehensive, school wide suicide prevention program for middle and high
school students. The goal of Lifelines is to promote a caring, competent school community
in which help seeking is encouraged and modeled and suicidal behavior is recognized as an
issue that cannot be kept secret. Lifelines seeks to increase the likelihood that school staff
and students will know how to identify at-risk youth when they encounter them, provide an
appropriate initial response, and obtain help, as well as be inclined to take such action.

Lifelines includes a set of components to be implemented sequentially: a review of
resources and establishment of administrative guidelines and procedures for responding to
a student at risk; training for school faculty and staff to enhance suicide awareness and an
understanding of the role they can play in identifying and responding to a student with
suicidal behavior; a workshop and informational materials for parents; and implementation
of a curriculum for students, the Lifelines Curriculum, to inform students about suicidal
behavior and discuss their role in suicide prevention.
