Elodea Lab Instructions

Problem Statement:

In this lab, you will be observing with a microscope how the fresh water plant Elodea is affected by fresh water and salt water. You will use the data collected in this lab to generate a model of the cell membrane. You will then defend your argument WITH EVIDENCE gathered from this lab and your prior knowledge about cell organelles.

Materials:

Fresh water 

Saltwater solution 

Beaker 

Pipette

Cover slips

Blank microscope slides

Lens paper

Compound microscope

Forceps

 lodea plant

Procedure

1. Remove a leaf of Elodea from one of he plant stems with the forceps.

Place the lead on the microscope slide.

2. Place a drop of fresh water on top of the leaf at the center of a slide.

3. Place the cover slip on top of the water. If you get any air bubbles, you need to tap the cover slip and use a paper towel to remove the excess water.

4. Focus the microscope under SCANNING POWER. Then focus the microscope under LOW POWER.

5. Draw

2 cells under LOW POWER and label the CELL WALL and

CHLOROPLASTS in the box below.

6. Remove the cover slip and blot the pond water with a paper towel. Place a drop of saltwater solution onto the

Elodea leaf and replace the cover slip.

7. Focus the microscope under SCANNING POWER. Then focus the microscope under LOW POWER.

8. Watch where the chloroplasts go and what happens to the cell wall. It may take one minute. Draw 2 cells and label the CELL WALL and the CHLOROPLASTS.

DRAW a model of what you believe the cell membrane has to look like for the phenomenon you saw in the lab in occur:

YOUR MODEL OF THE CELL MEMBRANE:

Complete the “Your Evidence” and the “Your Justification of the Evidence” sections below to generate your argument in support of your model:

The Research Question: the phenomenon in lab to occur?
