Mangrove trees
A Mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizhopora. Mangroves have
special aerial roots and salt-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water
(brackish water is salty, but not as salty as sea water)
There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some prefer more
salinity, while other likes to be very close to a large fresh water source (such as a river). Some
prefer areas that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with sea
water every day during high tide. Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the
ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also
need to be firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves.
There are three types of mangrove roots play an important role for it :



Support roots which directly pierce the soil
Level-growing roots which twist upward and downward, with the upward twist
emerging on the water surface.
Level-growing roots whose downward twist (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
Any part of a root that appears above the water flows oxygen to the plant under water surface.
As the soil begins to build up, these roots produce additional roots that become embedded in
the soil.
In order to grow well mangroves require the following, EXCEPT …

The roots twist upward and downward

The trunk should be above the water surface

The leaves should be above the water surface

The trees should be firmly attached to the ground.

The part of the plant under the water should have enough salt.

Some of the world’s finest roads make us of bodies of water. They are called Canals.
Canals are man-made waterways. They usually straight and narrow. But they are filled with
water. They connect rivers and lakes, ocean and lakes, rivers and rivers, and ocean and ocean
so that boats and ships can go from one to another.
Most canals are used for transportation. Barges, boat, and ship carry goods over canals. Some
are used to irrigate land or to carry sewage from large cities. Canal also reduces the cost of
shipping goods and offers travel short cuts.
Canal even go over hills and mountains, but you know that water can’t flow up a hill; so how
can water and boats in a canal go up hill?
Something called a lock is used. It is a giant tank. The tank is big enough to hold a long boat.
The boat floats into the tan, and the doors behind it are closed to lock the boat in there. The
more water in let into the tank. When the tank is full of water, the tank door in front is opened
and the boats float out.
The boats floats higher and higher as water rises it floats either out into a higher part of canal or
into another tank or lock, which will lift is still higher.
To go down the hill on another side, the boat enters a lock that is full of water. As the water is
let out of the lock, the boat will float lower and lower. So, lock makes it possible for boats or
ship to move from one water level to the other.
Why do people build canals?

To lift boats

To rise water

To store sewage

To hold a giant tank

To connect rivers, lakes and oceans.

The Incas used to be a large empire of 990000 km2 in Peru of South America. Their city was
high up in the Andes Mountains. They were well-known for their great wealth, especially gold.
This great empire was unfortunately destroyed in an attack by the Spaniards who were
searching for their famed gold. Although this empire existed way back in 1493, it was not
backward but complex and well-organized. The empire was ruled by the Sapa Inca, Lord of the
World. Son of the Sun. He owned everything in the empire-the land, soil, gold and even the
people. The people, therefore, had no freedom.
Boys and girls were to live a life of obedience and tradition. They began working in their Ayllu
or family groups. The rule was Ama Sua, Ama Llulla, Ama Sheklla, which means, "Do not
steal, do not lie, don not be lazy."
Despite this difficult way of life, the Inca were very skillful. They constructed drainage system
and underground water reservoirs. Their buildings were made from huge stones. These were
cut to fit perfectly together so that no mortar was needed. Their rope bridges were so strong
that even a horse could gallop across them!
The Incas had no written language. Information was recorded on knotted string called Quipus.

Once upon a time there lived as neighbors, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit was a good shot, and
the bear, being very clumsy, could not use the arrow to good advantage. The bear would call
over the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and came with the bear to the
other side of the hill. The rabbit, fearing to arouse the bear's anger by refusing, consented and
went with the bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the hungry family. Indeed, he shot and
killed so many that there was lots of meat left after the bear and his family had loaded
themselves, and packed all they could carry home. The bear was very gluttonous and did not
want the rabbit to get any of the meat, so the poor rabbit could not even taste the blood from
the butchering, as the bear would throw earth on the blood and dry it up. poor rabbit would
have to go home hungry after his hard day's work.
The bear was the father of five children. The youngest child was very kind to the rabbit. The
mother bear, knowing her youngest child was very hearty eater, always gave him an extra large
piece of meat, but the youngest child didn't eat. He would take it outside with him and
pretended to play ball with it, kicking it toward the rabbit's house, and when he got close to the
door he would give the meat with such a great kick, that it would fly into that rabbit's house and
in this way the poor rabbit would get his meal unknown to the papa bear.

Let’s make the City Clean and Fresh
A clean and fresh city will surely make the inhabitants healthy. Every morning especially in
dry season, all roads must be watered with clean water and swept by the workers of regional
government under the mayor’s instruction.
To protect people from heavy pollution caused by cars, trucks and motorcycle, enough trees
must be planted along the roads. Every building or house in the city must be surrounded by
short and small trees which bear colorful flowers.
Bad and improper habits which cause disadvantages. Such as smoking and throwing rubbish
anywhere should be stopped at once.
The city mayor will have to think over the way to educate people, so they realize how
important cleanliness and health are. More public lavatories are badly needed.
It will be wise if the city mayor decides a certain amount of fine to be paid by those who break
the government regulation on cleanliness matter. For example, a man who urinates not at a
lavatory, smokes not at a smoking room or throws rubbish at the roads should be fined. Beside
dirtying the environment with cigarettes butts. Smoking will also cause pollution and bad lung
diseases to other people.
So, bad habits and impolite attitude should be immediately stopped, otherwise the city will be
dirty, unhealthy, badly polluted and will never attract foreign and domestic tourists as well
What is the difference between paragraphs two and four?

Paragraph two talks about protecting people from pullation and paragraph four talks about the c
ity mayor should do

The idea stated in paragraph four is contrary to that stated in paragraph two

It is necessary to fine people who break the government regulations

Both paragraphs talk about the condition of a city

Both paragraphs tell how to protect people from pollution

The Japanese traditional house made of wood is expected to las about twenty years before
having to be repaired or rebuilt. Each year it is depreciated.
The interior design is what really sets the Japanese traditional house. With the exception of the
entry way (Genkan), the kitchen (Daidokoro), the bathing room (Sento) and the toilet (Benio).
The rooms in a Japanese traditional house does not have a Designted use.
A room can easily be a living area, a bedroom, a dining room or any combination. Large rooms
are partitioned by Fusuma, sliding doors made of wood and thick paper. The paper used for
Fusuma is called Washi. These sliding doors can be removed whenever a larger space is
needed.
In large traditional houses, there was one large room, or Ima (living space) that could be
divided as needed. The smaller rooms like kitchen, bath and toilet were small extensions to one
side. Rouka, or wooden-floored hallways. Follow the edge of the home. Windows are made of
wood and shoji paper, which is thin enough to let the light shine through.
Even Japanese modern houses tend to have one traditional Japanese room, called a Washitsu.
This room has tatami mats on the floor as used in Japanese traditional house. Tatami are thick
straw mats covered with stitched woven rushes. Tatami are smooth and firm enough to walk
on. While making a sleeping surface more comfortable than wood or stone.
The Genkan is usually a step below the level of the rest of the house. When people enter the
home, they leave their shoes in the Genkan, pointed toward the door so they only need to slip
them on when they are ready to go out. Indoor slippers are often worn inside the house.
The kitchen in most traditional Japanese homes will contain a stove with a very small oven and
broiler and an electric refrigerator. Counter space for food preparation and a sink are also
located in the kitchen.
The bathing room contains a tub and is often waterproof. An adjacent area is available for
showering. The Japanese re-use bathwater, either for other bathers or for washing laundry, so it
is important not to dirty the water with soap and dirt. Dirty portions of the body can be washed
before stepping into bath.

ADOPTION
Adoption is the process by which people take a child who was not born to them and raise him
or her as member of their family. By law, adopted children differ from foster children. An
adopted child has all the legal rights of a member of the family that raises him or her. A faster
child does not.
Parents place their children up for adoptions for many reasons. Some parents feel they cannot
care for their off springs because of health or economic condition. Some others, especially
unwed parent, may not want to raise a child.
But there are couples who cannot have children of their own. Adoption gives them opportunity
to raise a family. They can get one from an adoption agency if they have all the requirements
asked.
SState laws prohibit adoption agencies from revealing the identity of the natural parents to the
adoptive parents. These laws also forbid agencies from disclosing the identity of the adoptive
parents to the natural parents. In some states, the law permits adopted persons who are at least
18 years old to see their birth certificates including the natural parent’s name
On the country, many adopted people worked to change the laws. They argue that people have
a right to know their identity. They said that keeping secret their adoptions records violate their
right.
On the other hand, many people feel adoption records should be kept secret. If not, natural
parents might change their minds years later and take the child away from the parents who
raised him or her. Some experts advise that a child should know of the adoptions by the age of
6 or 7. Surveys have shown that most adopted children develop normally.
An adoptive child has no right ....

To live with his/her natural parents

To know his/her adoption record

To be well treated as member of a family

To receive inheritance

To get adequate love and care

Maura, who liked to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had
many suitors.
One by one she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks, all equally young
and handsome, rich and strong. It was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.
One evening, Maura disguised herself and went to the camp of the three sheiks, as they were
about to have a dinner, and asked them for something to eat.
The first gave her some leftover food the second gave her some unappetizing camel’s tail; the
third sheiks who was called Hakim, offered her some of the most tenders and tasty meat, After
dinner, the disguised queen left the sheiks’ camp.
The following day queen invited the three sheiks to dinner at her palace. She ordered her
servant to give each one exactly what they had given her the evening before
Hakim, who received a plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two could not share
it with him, and this act finally convinced Queen Maura that he was the man for her.

Higher Education for Women
This modern era, there are still some parents who are reluctant about sending their daughters to
college. The narrow attitude shown to women's education is largely due to the traditional role
of women in society
A woman is expected to be a wife and a mother. Most parents believe that if their daughter gets
married and chooses to be a housewife, then the higher education will be a waste. However, an
educated woman is not only a better wife but also contributes something to the society.
Now days, more and more women are successfully combining their career and marriage.
Educated women are richer both emotionally and financially. They are able to find an outlet for
their monotonous drudgery of their house keeping. they bring more satisfaction and
contentment of their lives.
Depriving girls of higher education is class discrimination. Time has Changes; modern society
needs the talents of its people regardless of gender. Today, women work alongside men. in fact,
in the last few decades , women have made outstanding contributions to society.
Women should be given the freedom to be educated whether or not they get married or go to
work after finishing their education, because it is only through education that a woman will
find herself useful and discover what she wants in life. A woman who works is not an insult to
her husband. Conversely, her husband should feel proud of her achievements since marriage is
actually an equal partnership.
Therefore, parents should not think that girls should receive less education just because they
will-get married one day.
What is the main purpose of the text?

To tell the parents in this modern era about how to educated their daughter

To persuade readers what should and should not do about education.

To explain to readers about how to give education for their daughters.

To put forward of view or argument about higher education for women.

To describe the fact about how some parents educate their daughters.

married and chooses to be a housewife, then the higher education will be a waste. However, an
educated woman is not only a better wife but also contributes something to the society.
What makes parents reluctant to send their daughters to college?

They think education will be a waste of time.

They have to contribute something to the society.

More women are successful in their college.

Tradition roles of women in society do not need high education.

It is a waste for women to go to college.

One day in July 2005, I went fishing on Sodus bay. I casted under our own dock with a rubber
worm and BOOM! A big bass took off to the other side of the dock and I was sure the line was
going to break because his pulling was rubbing the line against sharp rocks.
Three times I pulled him back to my side of the dock and three times he got back to the other
side of the dock. Finally, I got him to my side and he was tired. I knew that this was the biggest
bass I had ever seen. I worked him towards me and got down on my belly, reached down and
gripped him. However, I didn’t have a good grip at first and I let him down to the water for a
few seconds to get a better grip.
The next thing I knew he was swimming away. No! I screamed louder than I ever had. It was
the first time I cried over a fish. What a huge fish. This is a true story and a sad one for me.

Which of the following is not the reason why parents place their child up for adoption?

He or she is from a poor family

His or her parents are not in good health

His or her parents does not want to raise him/her

His or her parents cannot afford to give good education

His or her parents do not love them

They are straight and narrow like some roads (paragraph 2)

The Rabbit’s Revenge
Long ago a rabbit and a lion were neighbors. The lion was very proud, and was fond of
boasting about his strength. And thought they were such close neighbors, the lion looked down
upon the rabbit, and used to bully and frighten her. Finally, the rabbit could stand it no longer
and wanted to get her own back.
One day she went to the lion and said “good day. Respected elder brother. Imagine it, I met an
animal over there who looked exactly like you, and he said to me, ‘Is there anyone in the world
who dares stand up to me? If there is, let him come and have a duel with me. If there is no one,
all of you have to submit to my rule and be my servants!” “Oh. He was an intolerable braggart!
He is so puffed up with pride that his eyes can’t even light on anyone!” added the rabbit.
“Oho.” The lion said. “Didn’t you mention me to him?” “Yes, indeed.” The rabbit replied. “But
it would have been better if I hadn’t. When I described how strong you were, he just sneered
and said dreadfully rude things.
He even went so far as to say that wouldn’t take you for his attendant!” The lion flew into a
rage and roared. “Where is he? Where is he?” So the rabbit took the lion behind a hill and, not
going too near herself. Painted to a deep well from a distance. And he said, “He is down there,
in the well.”

Blueberries, cranberries, and hack blueberries-like dark-skinned bunch grapes-contain
resveratrol, a potential anticancer agent. That’s a new finding from preliminary data from ARS
collaborative studies with Rutgers university-New Jersey and Canada, Kent Ville, Nova Scotia.
Resveratrol protects dark skinned bunch grapes from fungal diseases and provides health
benefit to consumers, including protection from cardiovascular disease. The compound’s
anticancer potential warranted its examination in other fruits.
Using gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric procedures. The scientists measured the
resveratrol content of 30 whole fruit samples of blueberry, cranberry, huckleberry, and related
plants representing 5 families and 10 species of Vaccinium fruit. They found that several
samples contained varying amounts of the compound. Analysis of extracts of the skin,
juice/pulp, and seed of Muscadine grapes showed that its concentration in fruit skin was
highest. Levels in the juice/pulp were much lower than in either skin or seeds. Researchers are
continuing to analyze more Vaccinium and Muscadine samples. Future research goals will
include enhancing production of resveratrol in selected species.
How many fruit samples are used in the research?

Maura, who liked to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had
many suitors.
One by one she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks, all equally young
and handsome, rich and strong. It was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.

about to have a dinner, and asked them for something to eat.
