The British Conquest of North America:
Summary Notes to Help You!
1754: fighting between Britain and France to control the Ohio Valley (Western
boundary of the 13 colonies) soon expanded into a fight for all of North America.
1755: British expulsion of the Acadians from Acadia because they refused to agree
to the “oath of allegiance” (loyalty and defence of Britain), preferring to remain
neutral in the event of war between the French and the British. 11000 people
were deported from the British colony.
1756: The Seven Years’ War began, when the war went global. Britain aimed to
destroy the French navy and dominate the seas.
1759: During the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, the British capture Quebec, the
capital and military stronghold of New France.
1760: During the Battle of Sainte Foy, the French defeated the British and drove
them back to Quebec. Eventually a British ship arrived with supplies and troops to
defeat the French.
1763: The Seven Years’ War ended when France signed a treaty with the BritishThe Treaty of Paris. Under the terms of this treaty, France gave up almost all of its
claims to North America. France negotiated the following guarantees:
1. Britain would not retaliate against French allies.
2. Britain would allow Catholics of New France the freedom of religious
practice.
Pontiac, leader of the Odawa nation, organized an alliance of First Nations to
oppose Britain’s takeover.
