Analysis- Paraphrase “You’ve got to find what you love, and that is as true for work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” With this sentence he talks about finding a job or a career that you like and that you know you can do it and its right for you. This sentence is like a inspirational sentence because he did that and he loved his job more than anything and really enjoyed it. Major Premise/Theme/Main Idea “The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods in my life.” I think this is the main idea because Jobs after being through a lot of difficulties to where he was, he realized that all that was worthy of everything and that it got him to where he really enjoyed his job. Logos “…then I got fired. Well, as Apple grew, we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so, things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge, and eventually we had a falling out….” I think the logos for this speech was that Jobs after creating something that was his, he still got fired from it because people were against you and they will do that even if you’re the owner. Pathos “About a year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer…it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.” I think this sentences were pathos because he was saying that he got diagnosed with cancer and it wasn’t incurable so he only had a few months to live. Ethos “You have to trust in something – you gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever – because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart…” I think ethos is when Jobs was saying just to believe in something to gain confidence in yourself to get where you want to get. Powerful Lines “The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.” “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Questions?
