COURSE
DESCRIPTION This course prepares students for entry into the AP courses in junior and senior years.
Students are expected to develop advanced skills in reading, composition, oral
communication and logical argument. Students will read and respond to a broad
selection of literature. Literary analysis will look through the lenses of style and
structure, rhetorical strategies, diction, figurative language, imagery, selection of
detail, language and syntax. Students will master literary terms, and emphasis will be
placed on vocabulary development. Writing well about literature is a key component
of the class.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES
The NAD Curriculum Guide for Language Arts Grades 9-12 identifies five strands of
study for the English curriculum: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. In
reflection of these areas of study, the English I curriculum provides students with
opportunities to:
1. Read selected literary texts for understanding and significance;
2. Participate in the whole process of writing: generating ideas, organizing, drafting
revising, re-drafting, proofreading, and sharing the final draft;
3. Write with increasing maturity and complexity—demonstrating a logical
progression and coherence of ideas;
4. Develop a personal writing style and voice, varying it according to the
requirements of the subject and audience;
5. Incorporate appropriate spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and syntax
in all public work;
6. Listen thoughtfully and respectfully to others;

7. Express their own ideas verbally in a cogent and persuasive manner;
8. Use/view multi-media resources and develop ability to make judgments about
value; and
9. Better understand Christ and His redemptive power and grace as revealed in
language and literature.
REQUIREMENTS
Students will be required to do the following work:
 Write in response to assigned prompts
 Read assigned texts
 Participate in class discussions
 Do in-class exercises, quizzes, and other activities
 Maintain regular, punctual attendance
 Write semester examinations
Class assignments will be posted on the Burton Academy website.
Ask if you are not sure how to access the website.
PLAGIARISM Plagiarism from any source will be severely penalized. Plagiarism is the use of the
words or ideas of another without giving appropriate acknowledgement to the original author.
Papers will be spot-checked against computer sites from which students have been known to
plagiarize. Students who repeatedly plagiarize will be removed from the Advanced Placement course.
Analytic reading of a work of literature is not the same as reading the observations of another, such as
Cliff’s or Monarch Notes, or viewing a movie or television production. The AP Exam specifically warns
against using such “shortcuts”. Screenwriters often make significant changes in a work in preparing it
for production; these changes never affect the literary work positively.
They result in
oversimplification of the issues addressed by the author or focus on too narrow a segment of the
work as a whole.
DUE DATES ARE FIRM! All assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class the day it is due.
No late work will be accepted unless authorized by the instructor. If authorization is given, late
papers WILL BE PENALIZED fifteen percent per school day that they are late. If you are allowed to
turn in a paper late, it must be in your teacher’s hand at the beginning of your class period.
