FALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN
COMPETITION
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition
Transformed by Imagination: Designing the Ecology of Student Wellness in PostSecondary Education
wellness n. the state of being well or in good health (Barber 1650).
•
Adapting to student life at OCAD University can be both a challenging and
exciting experience for each student. Achieving a sense of wellness while
balancing the demands of your studies with your personal responsibilities or
needs is difficult and sometimes impossible. While the curriculum may ask you
to consider the “health and wellness” of other people when you design your
objects, environments and communication strategies, this competition
challenges you to consider ways of promoting “wellness” in your immediate
environment: OCAD U. Consider the halls in which you walk and talk… the
ways in which you navigate your education… and imagine designing for the
ecology of student wellness at OCAD U.
•
The “Six Dimensions of Wellness” refer to the Occupational, Physical, Social,
Intellectual, Spiritual and Emotional aspects of a person’s life (“Six Dimensions
of Wellness”). The following descriptions outline the ways in which wellness
could be experienced by a post-secondary student:

•
Occupational: the ability to gain personal satisfaction through the project work
performed, understanding its meaning in the larger scope of this journey of
learning.
•
Physical: the ability to learn in a studio-based environment, where using both
fine and gross motor skill is a necessity that imposes its own rigor on the body.
•
Social: the ability to maintain regular social interactions, receiving and giving
friendship and benefiting from the support of his/her peer group.
•
Intellectual: the ability to perform at his/her highest creative potential, use all
available resources, continually expanding skills and knowledge, and actively
seeking new opportunities to develop.
•
Spiritual: the ability to act from wisdom, make sound decisions, have a deep
appreciation of all natural forces, understanding the value of the hidden and
intangible qualities of objects and spaces.
•
Emotional: the ability to cope with stress, to understand criticism and praise,
and be able to absorb with joy new learning every day.

SECTION 2: THE PROJECT

•
•
The Task:
To design tools, methods, communication, spaces or objects that will achieve
and promote a balance between the Occupational, Physical, Social, Intellectual,
Spiritual, or Emotional “Dimension of Wellness” for OCAD U students. The
design outcome must improve student performance and overall well-being.

SECTION 2: THE PROJECT
www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition
•
•
The Inspiration:
Students are to research “The Six Dimensions of Wellness”, and examples of
initiatives that address wellness, and apply these principles to the context of the
OCAD U environment and experience. An example of a student-led initiative
that addresses the Physical, Social and Emotional aspects of students’ wellness
are the food-based programs run by the OCAD U Student Union. The “free
lunch,” “food bank,” and “food share” programs were inspired by the need to
provide students with affordable and healthy food in a community setting. By
creating opportunities for students to gather or attain wholesome food, these
initiatives promote student performance and overall well-being. A University-led
example of the application of wellness is the development of the Health and
Wellness Centre which offers a range of medical and counseling services
“responsive to issues relating to gender, race, age, culture, abilities, sexual
orientation, income and faith” (“OCAD U Health and Wellness Centre”).

SECTION 2: THE PROJECT
The Requirements:
Select two or more of the Dimensions of Wellness to address.
Use the following three questions developed by The National Wellness Institute
to determine how your project addresses wellness (“The Six Dimensions of
Wellness”):
•
•
Does this help people achieve their full potential?
Does this recognize and address the whole person (multi-dimensional
approach)?
Does this affirm and mobilize peoples' positive qualities and strengths?
•
•
Design tools, methods, communication, spaces or objects that will achieve and
promote a balance between the Occupational, Physical, Social, Emotional,
Spiritual, Professional and Intellectual Dimensions of Wellness for OCAD U
students.

Students from other institutions are not eligible to participate.
Teams must officially register at the Launch (Thurs. November 7th) or in
the Design Office between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm Noon (Fri. November 8th)

Application of Article 2.3 (TCPS2): Observation in Public Place
The assessment of whether a space is a public place must be made on a caseby-case basis. The first consideration is whether the space in question is open
to the public and intended to serve the public (e.g. museums, parks, libraries,
shopping malls). The second key consideration is whether the proposed
research fulfills the three conditions of the exemption in Article 2.3: a lack of
researcher involvement/interaction with the individuals or groups concerned, a
lack of any reasonable expectation of privacy, and the impossibility of identifying
specific individuals in the dissemination of research results. If all conditions are
met, the proposed research involving the observation of people in a public place
would be exempt from REB review. If there is any doubt as to whether a
particular condition has been satisfied, for example whether the people being
observed have a reasonable expectation of privacy, then the [research should
not be attempted].
For a definition of research, please see the Resources section of this brief.

performance and overall well-being.
All student responses will be considered in the context of the following Faculty
of Design Mission Statement and OCAD U’s Statement of Diversity and Equity.
Faculty of Design: Design and Humanity – Mission Statement:
The goal of Design and Humanity is to create objects, communications,
environments and experiences that nurture community, humanize technology,
satisfy human needs and empower the individual. Design and Humanity strives
to achieve the maximum quality of experience for people for each ecological
unit consumed in its creation, production and use.

Extension cords and cords to electronic devices have to be taped down with
